CPTSD

2024/10/29 Edited to

... Read moreIt's a heavy truth, but as the saying goes, 'A child should not bear the trauma of the ones who brought them into this world.' This powerful sentiment resonates deeply when you're grappling with Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) and the pervasive weight of grief. For me, finding words that truly articulate these overwhelming feelings has been a lifeline, and often, those words come in the form of poetry. Many people hear 'PTSD' and think of a single, acute traumatic event. But CPTSD is a different beast, born from prolonged, repeated trauma, often in childhood or inescapable situations. Unlike PTSD, which might manifest as flashbacks to a specific event, CPTSD often involves a more fractured sense of self, difficulty regulating emotions, and pervasive issues with relationships. It shapes your core identity, making 'rebuilding yourself' not just a goal, but a fundamental process of rediscovery. Understanding this distinction was a huge step in my own healing journey. It helped me realize that my struggles weren't just 'me being broken,' but a natural response to complex, ongoing trauma. Grief, too, can complicate this healing, especially when it comes with what many call 'grief brain fog.' Have you ever felt like your thoughts are swimming in molasses, your memory is shot, and simple decisions feel monumental? That's brain fog. It's a real symptom of deep emotional processing, where your brain is working overtime to cope with loss. For me, it meant forgetting appointments, struggling to focus at work, and just feeling generally 'off.' What helped me navigate this was creating small, manageable routines, allowing myself grace on 'foggy' days, and engaging in activities that gently brought me back to the present, like reading comforting poetry or journaling. It's not about forcing clarity, but about acknowledging and nurturing your overwhelmed mind. This is where poetry truly shines. It doesn't demand perfect coherence or logical explanations. Instead, it offers a space to explore the jagged edges of trauma and the soft ache of grief. Reading a collection of poems that bravely tackles CPTSD, grief, death, and rebuilding yourself can feel like someone finally sees your soul. It validates your pain and offers a mirror to your unspoken experiences. It’s not just 'reading poetry is my therapy'; it’s an active engagement with emotions, a way to process without judgment. It helps you articulate what you didn't even know you felt. Healing from CPTSD and profound grief is a marathon, not a sprint. It involves honoring the past, understanding its impact, and consciously rebuilding a future where you are not defined solely by your wounds. Finding resources like powerful poetry that speaks to these experiences can be incredibly empowering. It reminds you that you're not alone in carrying the weight that 'a child should not bear,' and that courage and resilience can truly help you find strength to rise again.
