... Read moreWhen recovering from narcissistic abuse, one of the biggest challenges is dealing with the people who unknowingly or deliberately enable the narcissist's behavior. These enablers often use well-meaning but ultimately harmful phrases to defend or excuse the narcissist's actions. A common example is the phrase, "Why don't you just be the bigger person?" While it might sound like advice encouraging patience or forgiveness, in the context of narcissistic abuse, it can minimize your pain and pressure you to tolerate mistreatment. From my own experience navigating recovery, I found that recognizing these enabling statements was crucial to setting boundaries. Enablers might also say things like, "Everyone makes mistakes," or "They're just going through a hard time," which deflects responsibility from the narcissist. Understanding these patterns helped me see that these people, often called "flying monkeys," are part of the narcissist's control tactics. It's important to remember that enablers may not always be acting with ill intent; sometimes they are manipulated themselves or lack awareness about the abuse happening. However, their defense of the narcissist can reinforce toxic dynamics and delay healing. Building a support system of people who validate your experience and encourage your boundaries can make a big difference. Learning to respond calmly but firmly to such enabling comments and seeking validation from trusted friends or professionals helped me reclaim my personal power. Recovery isn’t just about dealing with the narcissist but also navigating the social environment that supports their behavior. Becoming aware of these "stupid things enablers say" was a key step toward healing for me, and I hope it can help others realize they don’t have to be "the bigger person" at their own expense.
