5 things to know before starting out at the gym:
1. You’re going to fail, and that’s okay. I’ve been working out consistently for the past 5 years and I fail everyday. Pushing yourself to the limit lets you know what to strive for the next time! Obviously, don’t hurt yourself. But if the weights are getting heavy, or the run is getting harder, or you can’t finish a Pilates class, don’t give up. It just means you’ll improve the next time, and keep improving!
2. It might seem embarrassing but I promise, everyone in there is just as focused on themselves as you are. I think everyone feels gym anxiety, even if you’ve been going for a while. It really helps to start making gym friends, or bring a buddy along. Then you can make it about having fun and less about worrying and wondering what people are thinking!
3. Finding an accountability buddy helps so much! I have a trainer who pushes me and holds me accountable. My boyfriend is also an avid gym goer, so I always have someone to push me and make sure I’m getting those gym days in.
4. Building a routine is key! I get up at 4:45am so I can get my morning started at the gym. It helps that my drive to the gym is about 25 minutes, so I have time for a little car jam session. That’s when I usually have my energy drink so I try to look at that as a little treat. Anything to get you up and going! Now I look forward to my alarm in the morning. It’s not “I have to go to the gym”, it’s “I get to go to the gym!”
5. There are so many ways to workout, I’d say lifting isn’t your thing don’t be afraid to try something else! Everyone’s body is so different. I realized very quickly that I HATE running. So I started weight lifting and that changed how I view working out. I enjoy it and I started seeing more results. You have to listen to your body. If what you’re doing isn’t fun, or isn’t working, then it’s time for a change! Try a workout class, get outside for a walk, take some friends and learn how to play pickleball. Getting up and moving is half the battle!
