From childhood, too many women are taught that being “good” means sacrificing their needs, carrying emotional labor, forgiving endlessly, and putting everyone else first. Meanwhile, men are often celebrated for meeting the bare minimum of human decency. It’s time to challenge these unequal expectations and redefine goodness as mutual respect, accountability, compassion, and shared responsibility—not self-erasure. Please follow @light.of.lilith.

... Read moreGrowing up, I often noticed how the idea of being 'good' was different depending on our gender. Women around me were expected to always put others first, to smile through sacrifices, and to bear emotional burdens silently. Meanwhile, men seemed to receive praise just for showing basic kindness or avoiding wrongdoing. This conditioned double standard deeply affected how I valued myself and others.
Over time, I realized that true goodness should not be about self-erasure or endless forgiveness but about mutual respect, accountability, and compassion. When a woman sacrifices her needs constantly, it can breed resentment and burnout. Likewise, when basic human decency is seen as exceptional for men, it lowers the bar for kindness in society.
Redefining goodness means encouraging both women and men to hold themselves accountable for their actions, to communicate boundaries, and to share responsibilities equally. It’s about challenging old patriarchal norms that say women must silently suffer for harmony, while men are praised merely for not causing harm.
In my experience, openly discussing these double standards helps close the gap between expectation and reality. By promoting equality and self-worth, we can empower everyone to practice empathy and fairness without unequal sacrifices. It’s a personal journey but one that transforms relationships and communities for the better.
