Why did I Choose this Major? 🎥 🎞️

#Lemon8Diary #lemon8diarychallenge

I always had an admiration for movies growing up. By age 9, I started filming my Barbies and by middle school I was on iMovie creating short films with friends. I knew by high school that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

In my Major I have explored the many roles that film has to offer. Such as, director, 1st Assistant Director, Producer, Director of Cinematography, 1st Camera Assistant, Folly artist, Sound Design, Audio Engineer, Editor, Assistant Editor, Gaffer…and more!

My major has felt more like a job than school. I have gotten so much hands on experience that I am fully confident in my skills and can go out into the real world.

My current jobs are photographer & videographer for PULSE Magazine (an award winning student-run magazine), and a videographer for a Public Relations firm (helping promote businesses). I can definitely see myself doing an occupation similar or identical to these for a long time. It brings me so much joy to film and see the smiles on people’s faces when they see my final product💖

... Read moreBeyond just lectures, what truly makes a film major come alive is the hands-on experience, especially when you get to dive into actual film production and post-production work! I remember seeing the university building for the first time, knowing it held rooms full of creative potential. If you're considering a film major, let me tell you, getting your hands on professional-grade film production equipment is a game-changer. We spend so much time learning about different cameras, lighting, and sound, but nothing beats actually using them. Imagine opening up an orange hard case to find all the essential camera gear neatly organized, ready for your next shoot. From various lenses to specialized audio recorders, having access to this equipment is crucial. It’s not just about theory; it’s about learning to balance a camera with a lens for that perfect shot, understanding the nuances of a shotgun mic, and setting up lighting to create a specific mood. We often have workshops where we simulate real-world sets, which gives us invaluable practice before we even step onto a professional project. This practical application transforms textbook knowledge into usable skills. Then comes the magic of post-production in the film editing suite. This is where all the raw footage, sound, and visual ideas come together. Our department boasts incredible film editing suites, each equipped with multiple workstations. It’s not just a computer; it's a dedicated environment designed for detailed post-production work. Each workstation typically features a large monitor, often two, a precise keyboard, and a mouse, allowing for intricate editing tasks. We learn industry-standard software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, and DaVinci Resolve. The ability to sit down at a professional workstation and manipulate footage, color grade, add visual effects, and mix audio is incredibly empowering. It’s a space where you can truly experiment and bring your vision to life, turning hours of raw footage into a polished final product. For film production students, these editing suites become a second home. We spend countless hours collaborating on projects, refining cuts, and perfecting sound design. It's not uncommon to see groups of students huddled around a monitor, discussing frame by frame. This collaborative environment in the editing suite is fantastic for learning from peers and getting diverse perspectives. We get to work on everything from short films and documentaries to commercial projects for local businesses, gaining experience that feels exactly like a real job. The professors are often industry veterans who guide us through complex editing techniques and share practical tips that you won't find in any manual. If you're an aspiring film student, I highly recommend looking into the facilities your prospective university offers. Access to good film production equipment and state-of-the-art film editing suites can make all the difference in your learning journey. Don't be afraid to try every piece of equipment, ask questions, and spend extra time in the editing suite. That’s where you truly hone your craft and develop the confidence to step into the professional world. It's an exciting path, and these resources are your playground for creativity!

Why I picked my Major
I decided my second semester of senior year that I was going to go to college. I hated the idea of more school, but knew I wanted to do more with myself than just work in a factory. My advisor suggested Supply Chain Management because the student who had previously majored in it had great success.
