Make talking about feelings a normal thing

For some, talking about feelings can feel awkward. For others, feelings determine how the behave and react. It’s important to have a balanced response to feelings and important to talk about them with your kids so that they can learn from you and how you manage your own feelings. Hope this helps!

... Read moreTalking about feelings can often feel uncomfortable, especially in families where emotions aren't openly expressed. However, normalizing these conversations with your kids is crucial for their emotional development. When parents openly discuss their own feelings, children not only learn to identify their emotions but also witness healthy ways to cope with them. It's important to approach emotions with balance—neither ignoring feelings nor letting them control behavior. By showing kids that feelings are natural and manageable, parents create an environment of trust and understanding. This can lead to improved emotional intelligence, better problem-solving skills, and enhanced relationships as kids grow. One effective strategy is to make everyday discussions about emotions part of your routine. For example, asking your child how they feel after school or sharing your own emotional experiences can start a dialogue that feels safe and normal. When children see adults talking about feelings without judgment or shame, it reduces the stigma and awkwardness often associated with emotional topics. Additionally, teaching children vocabulary around different emotions empowers them to express themselves clearly and seek support when needed. It also helps them recognize emotions in others, fostering empathy and social skills. Parents should also model healthy emotional regulation by demonstrating calm responses to stress and setbacks. This shows children that while feelings can be strong, they can be managed constructively. In summary, why talk to your kids about how you feel? Because it teaches them emotional literacy, builds resilience, and lays the foundation for open communication throughout their lives. Making this a normal part of family life can transform the way your child understands and engages with their emotions.
