Buying a home in my 20s & what gave the confidence

My husband and I really wanted a home but didn’t think we could afford anything near where we live or by his work. We’d been searching for months and just thought we would need to rent for a few more years to afford a full down payment or to get bigger paying jobs.

We weren’t super hopeful but got an amazing real estate agent who I’d know for a few months to look at homes. And I’ll be honest…..most of them were pretty trashed or just not worth the effort we’d have to put into them to make it look good.

We luckily found our home, it’s 100yrs old, and has a super unfinished basement. But the top part was all newly renovated and super cute! So we felt it was worth our monthly cost to own this home so I could do projects in the basement and backyard 🏠

What made me feel safe about this decision was the math we’d done beforehand on if we could afford it and what our finances would look like month to month. I also felt a million times better when we got a home inspection and there was nothing hugely wrong with the home! It has been well taken care of by previous owners over the past 100yrs ❤️

Overall we love our home and what it has done for us. Because of our preparation and research on this home there haven’t been any huge issues and we might just live here forever 🤗

... Read moreBuying a home in your 20s can feel daunting, but with the right approach, it can also be a fulfilling experience. A significant factor in this journey is finding a good real estate agent who understands your needs and can negotiate effectively on your behalf. They should not only provide insights into the properties you are interested in but also advocate for your financial safety in the contract process. Budgeting plays a crucial role in deciding what you can afford. It’s essential to understand your finances and stick to a budget that accommodates all your living expenses while allowing you to save as well. Many lenders may approve you for more than you should spend, so it's vital to assess your finances realistically and avoid overextending yourself financially. Moreover, having a supportive network can significantly ease the home-buying process. Family members can offer invaluable advice or insights born from their experiences. They can also help you understand complex terms and conditions, making it less overwhelming by providing guidance throughout your journey. Equipped with knowledge and the right support system, young homebuyers can navigate the real estate market more confidently, ensuring their first step into homeownership is a positive one.
