A classic treat! Here's a simple recipe for caramel and white caramel apples:
For Caramel Apples:
- 1-2 apples (Granny Smith or your preferred variety)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- Wooden sticks or skewers for dipping
For White Caramel Apples:
- 1-2 apples (Granny Smith or your preferred variety)
- 1 cup white chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Wooden sticks or skewers for dipping
# Instructions:
1. *Prepare the apples*: Wash, dry, and insert wooden sticks or skewers into the stem of each apple.
2. *Make the caramel*: Combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water in a medium saucepan. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for about 10-12 minutes, or until the caramel turns a deep amber color.
3. *Add the butter and vanilla*: Remove the saucepan from the heat and carefully whisk in the butter and vanilla extract. The mixture will bubble up and steam vigorously, so be cautious.
4. *Dip the apples*: Dip each apple into the hot caramel mixture, using a spoon or spatula to fully coat the apple.
5. *Let the caramel set*: Place the coated apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet or a silicone mat. Let the caramel set and cool completely.
6. *Make the white caramel*: In a separate saucepan, combine the white chocolate chips, corn syrup, and sweetened condensed milk. Place the saucepan over low heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the white chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth.
7. *Dip the apples in white caramel*: Dip each apple into the white caramel mixture, using a spoon or spatula to fully coat the apple.
8. *Let the white caramel set*: Place the coated apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet or a silicone mat. Let the white caramel set and cool completely.
# Tips:
- To prevent the caramel from pooling at the bottom of the apple, tilt the apple slightly as you dip it.
- If the caramel becomes too thick, reheat it gently over low heat.
- Experiment with different types of apples and flavor combinations, like adding nuts or sprinkles to the caramel.
