Book Review #24

This is the 3rd Emily Henry book I have read. I enjoyed it! I love her writing style and the banter her characters go back and forth with. I loved the dynamic and the chemistry between these friends-to-lovers and I liked how her descriptions really painted a picture of each scene, especially when they were in the hotel. So far, Happy Place has been my favorite book of hers. This one was a little slow for me and a little too predictable. But it was a good story overall and I liked the growth each character experienced.

... Read moreEmily Henry’s storytelling shines especially in her ability to portray the complexity of long-term friendships evolving into romance, vividly shown in 'People We Meet on Vacation'. This novel follows Poppy and Alex, whose decade-spanning annual vacations create a unique backdrop to their relationship. Despite their different lifestyles—Poppy’s restless wanderlust versus Alex’s homebody nature—their shared trips uncover deep emotional layers and unspoken truths. The charm of Henry’s writing lies in her witty, natural dialogue and the emotional depth she brings to character development. Readers often appreciate how her descriptive style paints scenes evocatively, such as the hotel settings where significant moments unfold, enriching the romantic tension. While some find the plot's predictability a slight drawback, it reflects the comfort and familiarity intrinsic to lifelong friendships transitioning into love. The book successfully balances humor with moments of introspection, depicting the challenges and growth each character faces. For fans of character-driven romance, this story invites reflection on the nuances of relationships, the importance of communication, and the courage it takes to confront past mistakes. 'People We Meet on Vacation' fits well within the popular friends-to-lovers trope but stands out due to Henry’s relatable characters and heartfelt narrative. Additionally, this novel continues themes seen in Henry’s other beloved works like 'Happy Place', offering readers consistent emotional satisfaction. For those new to Henry’s books or the genre, this novel serves as a warm introduction to contemporary romance that blends humor, deep friendship, and poignant romantic development. Overall, Emily Henry’s 'People We Meet on Vacation' is a delightful read for anyone who enjoys rich character dynamics, a touch of predictability balanced by emotional growth, and a vivid sense of place throughout their stories.
