How to make Mexican or Spanish Red Rice Recipe Arroz Rojo 😋
Today I’m making Mexican Rice, also known as Spanish Rice. A classic, flavorful side dish that pairs perfectly with any meal. Follow along for an easy recipe you can make at home!
ARROZ ROJO INGREDIENTS:
For the sauce:
► 2 tomatoes
► Small piece of white onion
► 2 garlic cloves
► 1 tbsp of tomato bouillon
► 1 tbsp of chicken bouillon
► 1 cup of water
For the rice:
► Some oil
► 2 cups of rice (I'm using long grain rice)
► 2 cups of water
► 1 jalapeño
Making Mexican Red Rice at home is a fantastic way to add a burst of flavor to your meals without needing any complicated ingredients. One tip I’ve learned from experience is toasting the rice in oil before adding the sauce and water; this step gives the rice a lovely nutty aroma and prevents it from becoming mushy. When preparing the tomato sauce, blending fresh tomatoes, onion, and garlic creates a rich foundation that enhances the overall taste. Using both tomato and chicken bouillon is a great shortcut to deepen the savory notes, but you can adjust the amounts to suit your preference or dietary needs. For a little heat, adding a jalapeño is optional but recommended if you enjoy a subtle spicy kick. Just be sure to remove the seeds if you want to keep the heat mild. A helpful trick is to use long grain rice as it absorbs the flavors better and maintains a fluffy texture after cooking. Also, simmering the rice covered on low heat until all the liquid is absorbed ensures an even cook without sticking to the pan. I’ve paired this Arroz Rojo with grilled chicken and beans, and it truly enhances the meal with its vibrant color and bold flavor. Whether for a family dinner or a festive gathering, this recipe never fails to impress! Experimenting with this traditional dish can be fun — you might try adding corn, peas, or cilantro garnish to put your own twist on the classic Mexican Red Rice. Happy cooking!
