Next step… dead mat 😬
Relearning a back-tuck after some time away from cheerleading can be both exciting and challenging. Using a dead mat provides a softer landing surface, which is essential for building confidence and reducing the risk of injury. From my experience, breaking down the skill into manageable steps—such as mastering the jump and tight tuck form before attempting the full flip—helps to rebuild muscle memory effectively. It's also important to maintain consistent practice and include drills that focus on core strength and flexibility, which are both key to a successful back-tuck. Watching videos of professional tumblers or former cheer routines can aid in visualizing the correct technique, or working with a coach can provide immediate feedback and corrections. Day 2 is often where frustration can creep in, but persevering through these early sessions on the dead mat makes the progression smoother and safer. Remember, every cheerleader’s journey is unique, so listening to your body and celebrating every small improvement is crucial. If you’re an ex-cheerleader like me, it’s rewarding to reconnect with these skills and see how far you can come with dedication.
