am i Selfish for wanting space?

My stepdad asked if my stepsister could stay in my apartment “just for a bit”… for free.

I said no.

It’s not that I hate her we’re just very different. I work full-time, I value peace, and honestly… I live alone on purpose. My home is the only space that’s 100% mine.

Now he’s calling me selfish and saying “family helps family.” But to me, helping someone doesn’t have to mean giving up your sanity or space.

I’ve offered to help in other ways job leads, budgeting help but sharing my home just isn’t something I can do.

Does that make me selfish?

... Read moreIt's so tough when family puts you in a position where you feel like you have to sacrifice your peace and personal space. Your feelings are completely valid! I totally get what you mean about 'I live alone for a reason' – our homes are our sanctuaries, especially for those of us who value quiet and privacy. Many of us have dealt with similar situations, whether it's a stepsister wanting to move in, or even just dealing with family members who don't respect boundaries. It’s not about hating them; it’s about protecting your mental well-being. When it comes to family, the line between 'helping' and 'enabling' or 'sacrificing your sanity' can get really blurry. Offering job leads or budgeting help, like you did, is a perfect example of helping without giving up your core needs. What happens when those boundaries do get crossed, though? Let's say your stepsister did move in, or perhaps you're already in a situation where a family member isn't respecting your space. One of the most common issues I hear is when a stepsister walks into my room unannounced. It feels like a complete violation! It’s your private area, and you deserve to feel secure there. Here are a few things that might help if you find yourself in a similar spot: Clear Communication is Key: It might feel awkward, but a direct, calm conversation is essential. Explain why you need your space. You could say something like, "Hey, I really value my privacy, and it makes me uncomfortable when people come into my room without knocking. Could you please make sure to knock first?" Frame it around your needs, not their actions being 'wrong.' Establish Physical Boundaries: Sometimes, verbal communication isn't enough. Consider adding a lock to your bedroom door if privacy is a consistent issue. It sends a clear message about your need for personal space. Even a simple 'Do Not Disturb' sign can help reinforce the message without being too confrontational. Designate specific areas as 'yours' – like a particular shelf in the fridge or a cabinet. Set Expectations Early: If someone is considering moving in, or if you're frequently hosting, have a boundary discussion upfront. Talk about noise levels, shared spaces, personal belongings, and guest policies. It's much easier to set these expectations before problems arise than to try and fix them afterward. Don't Justify, State: You don't owe anyone an elaborate explanation for your need for space. "This is what I need to feel comfortable in my home" is a perfectly valid statement. The "family helps family" argument can be a guilt trip. Remind yourself that healthy family relationships also involve respecting individual needs and boundaries. Helping family shouldn't come at the cost of your own well-being. Seek Support: Talk to trusted friends or other family members who understand your perspective. Sometimes just having someone validate your feelings can make a huge difference. Remember, protecting your peace and privacy isn't selfish; it's self-preservation. It allows you to be a better, more present person for yourself and for those you care about. Your home should be a place where you can relax and recharge, not a source of constant stress. It’s okay to say no to requests that compromise your essential needs, even if it’s family asking.
