Is this normal?
Ive been wanting an iPad for ages but never bought one because they’re pricey. He told me he’d get it for me as my Christmas gift. Great, right? Well… after he bought it, he asked how much I was contributing toward it. The iPad was about $1500. I was caught off guard but told him to just name a number and I’d send it — he never did, so I sent the full amount because I’m not interested in playing guessing games. He then sent me back $500 and said I was being “silly.” At this point, though, I don’t even want the gift anymore. If I’d known I was paying two-thirds of my “present,” I would’ve said no.
What makes it feel worse is that last year, I spent $750 on a birthday gift for him without asking him to pay part of it because that’s how gifts work. Now I’m seriously considering telling him to return the iPad and send me my $1000 back. Am I overreacting, or is it reasonable to expect your partner not to charge you for your own Christmas gift?

He isn’t obligated to buy an expensive gift. But offering one and then asking you to reimburse him afterward is manipulative and dishonest. If he couldn’t afford it or didn’t want to spend that much, he should have bought something cheaper and paid for it himself. Gifts do not come with hidden costs. Charging your partner for their own Christmas present is wrong, disrespectful, and a clear breach of trust. It turns a ‘gift’ into a financial guilt trip, and that’s not acceptable in a healthy relationship.
