Sensory Regulation Tools: Stim Menus

When I get into a state of severe overwhelm after an extended period of ignoring (accidentally or intentionally) my emotional needs, I find myself struggling to regulate. I used ChatGPT to collect sensory input suggestions and Canva to create the “menus”. I fall on the (undiagnosed until adulthood) autism spectrum and more than likely meet ADHD criteria. However, I believe these may be beneficial to most people! #sensoryoverload #emotionalregulation #selfadvocacy #mentalwellnessjourney #mentalhealthmatters

... Read moreSensory regulation is a valuable practice for individuals experiencing emotional overwhelm, sensory overload, or mental health challenges such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ADHD. Stim menus provide structured lists of sensory activities and tools tailored to help individuals regain balance and calm during moments of distress. These menus categorize sensory input into various types, each targeting specific sensory systems to promote self-regulation. The stim menus typically include high-intensity proprioceptive and tactile activities like pushing against a wall, squeezing a stress ball, or using resistance bands. These actions provide deep pressure input that can help ground and center the body. Auditory/oral stim options such as humming, singing, or using chewable accessories stimulate the auditory and oral sensory pathways, which can soothe and redirect focus. For daily regulation, micro-movements and discreet objects like fidget tools (spinner rings, worry stones) offer subtle sensory input that can be used unobtrusively in various settings. Other techniques include rhythmic tapping, cross-body squeezes, and shifting weight between feet to enhance body awareness and reduce anxiety. Mind-body sensory soothing strategies emphasize controlled breathing exercises, use of scented lotions, and holding cold water bottles to engage multiple senses and promote relaxation. These sensory inputs can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and emotional dysregulation. Using technology like ChatGPT and creative platforms such as Canva to compile sensory input suggestions into visually appealing and easy-to-use “menus” increases accessibility and personalization. These tools empower individuals—particularly those with undiagnosed or diagnosed autism and ADHD—to advocate for their sensory needs, ultimately supporting mental wellness journeys. Incorporating sensory regulation tools into daily routines or crisis moments can significantly enhance emotional resilience, self-advocacy, and overall mental health. Understanding the diverse sensory needs and responses and customizing stim menus accordingly is key to maximizing their effectiveness and promoting long-term emotional regulation.
