Overprogramming

2/16 Edited to

... Read moreAs a music educator, I've seen firsthand how overprogramming—assigning music that's too challenging for your ensemble—can negatively affect both student morale and progress. It's tempting to push for difficult pieces, assuming this will accelerate learning, but often it results in frustration, slow rehearsals, and diminished enjoyment. A key insight is to select repertoire that allows the band to achieve about 85% note and rhythm accuracy at concert tempo on the first reading. When students can successfully navigate the music early on, it frees rehearsal time for important artistic details like dynamics, articulation, and tone quality—elements that truly elevate the performance. One personal strategy is to carefully assess the technical demands of pieces against the current skill level of the students. For example, if your woodwinds struggle with fast passages or brass players have limited endurance, it’s better to choose music tailored to those capabilities rather than forcing too much complexity too soon. I’ve also learned it’s helpful to remind colleagues and guest conductors to avoid acting like drill sergeants focused solely on rhythm and notes. Music-making should be enjoyable and inspiring, not a tedious punishment focused on fixing every mistake. Celebrating small successes can build confidence and foster a supportive learning environment. Finally, don’t hesitate to seek feedback by sharing recordings with fellow educators. Sometimes what seems perfect to you might still have room for improvement to better suit your ensemble’s needs. This collaborative approach helps avoid pitfalls of overprogramming and leads to more successful, rewarding performances.
