... Read moreMany people don't realize that gym equipment can be a hotspot for germs, including the herpes virus, which can cause painful rashes like those on the arm. From my experience and what I've learned working in dermatology, it's essential to understand how these infections spread to prevent them. Herpes on your skin can result from contact with contaminated surfaces at the gym, especially if you have small cuts or abrasions where the virus can enter. While gyms often provide disinfectant wipes, not everyone uses them consistently, so equipment can remain contaminated. To reduce your risk, I recommend always wiping down machines before and after use and avoid touching your face during workouts. Wearing clean workout clothes and showering promptly after exercising also helps limit exposure. If you notice any unusual rashes or skin irritation after gym sessions, seek medical advice early to rule out infections like herpes. Being proactive about gym hygiene can protect you from uncomfortable skin issues while allowing you to enjoy your fitness routine safely.

Sometimes it’s from the disinfectant. Nobody reads the fine print! BUT some popular products state you have to let the disinfectant dry for a certain amount of time after wiping down said infected area. I was part of small town Hospice Nursing staff. Fun fact: I also had Funeral Home Transfer Care Specialists reiterated this info. to me. (Incase Nursing staff didn’t know how to disinfect surfaces I guess?)
