After Fibroid Surgery Must Haves

2025/2/8 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so brave to share your journey as you prepare for fibroid removal surgery! I completely understand how overwhelming it can be to find solid advice on what you really need for recovery. Many resources focus on the medical side, but the practical, day-to-day essentials for your 'before and after' journey are just as crucial. Getting organized beforehand makes a world of difference. Before Surgery: Setting Yourself Up for Success Think of the weeks leading up to your surgery as your 'nesting' phase. This isn't just about shopping; it's about creating a supportive environment. Ask All the Questions: Don't hesitate to ask your surgeon about expected pain levels, medication, activity restrictions, and any specific post-op instructions. Knowledge truly is power. Prepare Your Recovery Zone: Designate a comfortable spot where everything you need is within arm's reach. A wedge pillow with side pockets can be a game-changer for elevated sleeping, lessening abdominal pressure. Place chargers, remotes, books, and snacks on a bedside table. A grabber reacher tool will be invaluable for picking up dropped items without bending or straining your core – a big no-no post-op. Meal Prep: Cook and freeze easy-to-digest meals like soups or mild casseroles. You won't feel like cooking, and you'll need gentle, nutritious food. Stock up on high-fiber options to help prevent post-surgery constipation. Arrange for Help: Don't be a hero. Line up friends or family to help with chores, childcare, or driving you to follow-up appointments. Pack Your Hospital Bag: Include loose, comfortable clothes, slippers, toiletries, and comfort items. After Surgery: Navigating Your Healing Journey The first few days and weeks post-surgery are all about rest and gradual recovery. Be patient with your body. Pain Management is Key: Stay on top of your prescribed pain medication. Don't wait until the pain is severe. Discuss non-narcotic options with your doctor too. A microwavable heating pad can provide wonderful relief for abdominal discomfort or back pain. Gentle Movement: While rest is crucial, short, gentle walks around your home are important for circulation and to prevent blood clots. Just don't overdo it! Digestive Care: Anesthesia and pain meds can cause constipation. Stay hydrated, drink prune juice if needed, and incorporate fiber. Having flushable paper toilet seat covers can offer extra peace of mind when using public restrooms during follow-up visits. Hygiene & Comfort: Showering might be tricky initially. Disposable no-rinse bathing wipes are fantastic for staying fresh and feeling clean when a full shower is too much. Wear loose clothing, and consider overnight disposable underwear for comfort and managing any post-op bleeding or discharge. Protect Your Abdomen: Any pressure on your incision can be painful. A soft pink post-surgery pillow, often used as an "cough pillow," is perfect for holding against your abdomen when coughing, laughing, or even riding in the car to protect against seatbelt pressure. Emotional Recovery: It's normal to feel a range of emotions – from relief to frustration or even sadness. Allow yourself to feel them and reach out for support if needed. Remember, every body heals differently. Listen to your medical team and most importantly, listen to your own body. This thoughtful preparation will immensely aid your 'before and after' fibroid surgery experience.
