As an Advocate for Mental Health Awareness for all humanity

I have seen things

And today while circling around the foundations of grassroots movements of crisis intervention and conflict management,

I was able to put together these resources amongst others that have been quite pivotal in the development of crisis intervention strategies till date. Thought i should brief on this a little to create awareness and shed more light on a less talked agenda

See below 👇

Three major grassroots movements that helped shape crisis intervention into an emerging specialty during the 1970s and beyond were Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), the Vietnam veterans' movement, and the women’s movement.

These movements highlighted the need for immediate, specialized, and community-based support, transitioning from voluntary, grassroots action to established professional practice.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA): Established a model of peer support, rapid intervention, and long-term recovery for addiction.

Vietnam Veterans: Highlighted the intense psychological trauma of war, driving the development of PTSD recognition and crisis counseling.

Women’s Movement of the 1970s: Brought attention to sexual assault, domestic violence, and the need for specialized rape crisis centers and hotlines.

These movements, along with the influence of media coverage on crises, pushed for immediate, trauma-informed, and accessible help outside of traditional institutional settings.

... Read moreIn my experience working closely with mental health advocacy, I've seen firsthand how crucial grassroots movements have been in pushing for better crisis intervention strategies that truly address people's needs in the moment. Take Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), for example — its peer-support model doesn't just offer immediate help but also fosters long-term recovery frameworks that others have adapted for various crises. Around the same era, the Vietnam veterans' movement brought vital awareness to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), leading to specialized counseling approaches that acknowledge the deep psychological wounds left by war. This supported not only veterans but also paved the way for trauma-informed care across different crisis scenarios. The women's movement of the 1970s was a turning point for addressing issues that were often swept under the rug, such as sexual assault and domestic violence. Establishing dedicated rape crisis hotlines and centers provided survivors immediate access to specialized care and a safe space—an essential step in community-based crisis response. In fact, the visibility of such services has grown, making it easier for those in distress to reach out, thanks partly to media coverage that highlights these issues and resources. What resonates with me about these grassroots efforts is how they shifted crisis support from institutional and often inaccessible settings to community-driven, trauma-informed care. They empowered individuals to act rapidly and compassionately when someone is in crisis, which remains vital today. This historical context not only enriches our understanding of modern crisis intervention but reminds us of the power of collective action to influence healthcare practices and policies for better mental health outcomes. It's an ongoing journey to improve accessibility and effectiveness of crisis support—a work that requires continuous community involvement and awareness.
