Confidence in Trauma Work

Ever start a trauma session and feel unprepared halfway through? 😬 Maybe the client’s emotions spike, dissociation kicks in, or you realize you don’t have a clear pacing plan… and suddenly, the session feels chaotic instead of safe. We’ve all been there, and it’s stressful trying to juggle stabilization, grounding, and containment on the spot.

The Stabilize–Process–Integrate Trauma Framework™ is like a safety net in your pocket.

It gives you:

🛡 Grounding & stabilization exercises

📊 Quick dissociation screening

📝 Containment strategies

📍 A clear 3-phase system: Stabilize → Process → Integrate

Everything’s ready-to-use, so your sessions feel calm, structured, and safe — for you and your clients.

... Read moreIn my experience working with trauma clients, one of the biggest challenges is managing unpredictable emotional fluctuations and dissociation during sessions. The Stabilize–Process–Integrate Trauma Framework™ offers a much-needed structured approach that enhances therapist confidence and client safety. The foundation lies in the first phase—Stabilization—which focuses on helping clients build nervous system regulation before processing traumatic memories. This prevents emotional flooding and dissociative episodes that can derail progress. For example, I have found grounding exercises and containment strategies invaluable. Techniques like the Containment Exercise, which involves visualizing a secure, controllable 'container' for distressing memories, allow clients to temporarily set aside overwhelming thoughts. This isn’t avoidance but a way to pace trauma work responsibly. It provides a moment to regain composure and ensures readiness for deeper processing in later phases. A critical part of this framework is the quick dissociation screening process, which helps therapists identify early signs of detachment or overwhelm so they can intervene promptly. In my practice, using simple check-ins to assess present-moment awareness and distress levels keeps sessions calibrated and safe. It is reassuring to have these clinician readiness indicators at hand to decide when to pause and reinforce stabilization rather than pushing forward prematurely. Integrating this comprehensive, phase-oriented model has transformed my sessions from feeling chaotic to feeling controlled and effective. It benefits not only clients but therapists too by reducing session stress and liability concerns. If you’re struggling with pacing trauma work or want to adopt best practices aligned with trauma-informed care, this framework is a practical resource worth exploring. Ultimately, trauma therapy requires patience and skillful pacing, and having a clear system makes all the difference in achieving meaningful healing outcomes.

The first slide introduces "Part 2: Healing & Integration, Chapter 7: Shadow Work & The Subconscious Mind," focusing on understanding and reprogramming deep-seated patterns. It includes a Carl Jung quote and outlines the chapter's exploration of the subconscious, shadow self, and practical methods for healing.
This slide defines the shadow self as repressed emotions and denied aspects of personality, developing as a survival mechanism in childhood. It explains how suppressed traits manifest as triggers and emphasizes that integrating the shadow, rather than rejecting it, leads to personal transformation and self-awareness.
This slide explains the neuroscience of the subconscious mind, stating it controls 95% of daily actions. It details the roles of the limbic system and default mode network in storing emotional memories and reinforcing unconscious behaviors, highlighting how shadow work can rewire these neural pathways.

This image lists signs of healing from trauma, including increased awareness of triggers, reduced intensity of reactions, improved emotional intelligence, and a shift from powerlessness to confidence. It also mentions diminishing self-sabotage and realizing progress is possible.
This image describes what healing can look like through specific behaviors, such as self-compassion after mistakes, asking for help, questioning assumptions, not taking things personally, setting boundaries, and expressing needs.
This image contrasts the perceived linear path of healing with the actual non-linear journey. It illustrates that while people expect a steady progression, healing often involves setbacks, relapses, and ups and downs before ultimately getting better.
