... Read moreIf you're planning a 7-day itinerary through Kyushu, I highly recommend starting early each day to maximize your experience. For example, at Nakashima Farm, it's best to reserve farm tours in advance to avoid missing out, as they offer fascinating insights into Japan’s first cheese producer—something I initially overlooked. When visiting tea plantations like Yame Central Tea Plantation, arriving earlier in the day allows you to catch the lush green fields in their full glory and enjoy peaceful surroundings before the crowds arrive. Also, trying local ramen specialties in different prefectures, such as Kumamoto Ramen with its distinct black garlic oil soup, adds a flavorful cultural immersion to your trip. Public transport like highway buses served well for me, like the one from Fukuoka to Saga costing around ¥1300, making travel affordable and efficient. Staying near stations, as with my Airbnb just a minute from Saga Station, offered excellent convenience. Exploring Nagasaki on a day trip gave me a vibrant mix of history and culture—from the charming streets of Shinchi Chinatown to the scenic Glover Garden and breathtaking views atop Mt. Inasa. Make sure to check ropeway schedules for the best sunset experience. On your last few days in Kumamoto, don’t miss the beautiful Suizenji Jojuen Garden and shopping arcades that blend traditional and modern vibes. Pizzerias like Da Rocco surprised me with authentic Italian flavors in the middle of Japan. Overall, this itinerary offers a well-rounded experience with cultural landmarks, local experiences, and culinary delights. Planning your days with flexible timing and some advance bookings can help you enjoy Kyushu’s diverse charms fully.

This trip took place in the first week of December. It was pretty cold in Aso at this time - would highly recommend bringing warmer clothes! (Side note: Day 10 was pretty empty because we were feeling under the weather. Maybe we’ll try to visit Kumamoto again in future!)
