What Really Matters When It Comes to Healthy Aging

Healthy aging is having a moment and it can be quite overwhelming. Most of the long-term nutrition & healthy aging strategies are actually a lot less flashy.

I highlight 8 different strategies on Moderately Messy RD if you want to learn more. Specifically, staying free from major chronic disease, maintaining physical function, preserving cognitive health, supporting mental well-being & independence.

☕ Coffee may actually lower risk of chronic diseases and cognitive disorders. It contains polyphenols, and research has linked coffee intake with potential benefits for metabolic health, cognitive health, and longevity.

🫘Eat more plant-based protein. A large study found that protein intake, in general, was associated with healthier aging with an increase in plant-based protein resulting in even better physical and mental health.

🌱 Your gut may play a role in aging and even estrogen levels during menopause. Fiber variety, prebiotic + probiotic food sources are a large piece of the puzzle 🧩

🍓 Polyphenols are underrated. Foods like berries, cocoa, coffee, tea, herbs, spices, olive oil, apples, and colorful vegetables may help support long-term health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

💪 Muscle and bone are still the foundation. Strength training, adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, potassium, and possibly creatine all deserve attention — especially for women as we move through midlife.

But the goal isn’t to chase every trend.

The goal is to stay strong, capable, energized, and independent for as long as possible.

Comment **AGING** and I’ll send you the full post.

... Read moreFrom my personal experience focusing on healthy aging, it’s clear that small, consistent changes in diet and lifestyle can make a huge impact over time. One key area not always highlighted enough is the quality of carbohydrates consumed. Rather than cutting carbs entirely, I found that choosing whole grains, legumes, and colorful vegetables—rich in fiber and nutrients—supports sustained energy and healthy digestion, which is crucial as we age. Another underrated aspect is the importance of daily nuts intake. Nuts are packed with heart-healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants, and numerous studies have shown they contribute to lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Incorporating a small handful of nuts daily has personally helped me maintain my energy levels and feel more satiated. The Mediterranean diet stands out as a practical, enjoyable approach that offers multiple benefits. It emphasizes whole foods, plenty of plant-based proteins, healthy fats like olive oil, and a wide variety of polyphenol-rich foods such as berries and herbs—which can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress that accelerate aging. Gut health plays an increasingly recognized role in aging, especially in hormonal changes during menopause. Including a variety of prebiotic and probiotic foods like yogurt, fermented vegetables, and high-fiber fruits can support a balanced microbiome, which can influence estrogen levels and overall well-being. Lastly, strength training combined with nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium is vital for maintaining muscle and bone mass, particularly for women in midlife. This foundation helps preserve independence and physical capability. Healthy aging is not about chasing every new trend but embracing well-researched, sustainable habits that support longevity and quality of life. Small, intentional choices each day add up to meaningful results over time.
