Starting my day at Yama Cafe truly felt like embracing the Japanese concept of "Asakatsu," or morning self-care. The peaceful, cozy atmosphere reminded me of a place out of a Studio Ghibli film, making it a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a mindful breakfast. I opted for the Sockeye salmon grilled to perfection, which had a beautiful balance of saltiness that paired wonderfully with the fluffy white rice. What made the set even more special was the rich umami flavor of the shiitake mushroom in the miso soup, which felt deeply nourishing. The nukazuke, a Japanese-style pickle, was delightfully crisp and clean, adding a refreshing contrast to the meal. The vegetable appetizer included an inventive edamame purée alongside corn, tomato, shiitake mushroom, and green beans, creating a well-rounded veggie experience. One small but memorable highlight was the soft onsen tamago (poached egg) that added a creamy texture and enhanced the overall umami profile. Plus, small touches like the adorable chopstick rest made the experience feel thoughtfully curated. If you’re a fan of traditional Japanese breakfast or looking to try something new, I highly recommend adding the natto or mekabu seaweed as add-ons for extra depth of flavor and health benefits. Beyond breakfast, Yama Cafe’s menu offers delicious options like tuna tataki bowls and vegan bowls, plus sweet treats like ichigo daifuku, making it a versatile spot for any time of day. Whether you’re a local or visiting Vancouver, Yama Cafe is a gem for starting your day with a mindful and delectable Japanese breakfast experience.
