They Need You Differently

That age between little kid and almost tween can feel so confusing for parents 🥺 One day they still want comfort, the next day they pull away like they are too grown for it. But they are not rejecting us, they are learning how to need us differently. Maybe the goal is not to hold tighter, but to stay close in a way that respects who they are becoming 💛 #ParentingTok #GrowingUpFeels #SGParentLife #ChildIndependence #StillNeedYou

... Read moreNavigating the transition period from childhood to becoming a tween can be one of the most emotionally complex times for parents. Children at this stage are not simply rejecting parental affection but are learning to express their needs differently. From personal experience, I’ve noticed that the key lies in adjusting how we show support—not by holding on tighter, but by staying emotionally close without overwhelming them. Respecting their emerging independence means recognizing that their need for comfort doesn’t vanish; it changes form. Instead of overt cuddles or constant attention, they might seek quiet moments together or space to share their stories on their own terms. This shift can feel painful for parents who are used to more direct affection, but it’s essential to remember that this behavior reflects growth, not distance. It helps when parents create an environment that encourages trust and open communication without pressure. For instance, I found that starting small rituals like a quiet check-in after school or a shared activity they enjoy fosters closeness without feeling intrusive. Also, understanding that they might want to handle situations independently, such as school challenges or friendships, enables us to be supportive guides rather than controllers. The journey involves balancing respect for their maturity with the continuing need for parental presence. It’s a middle ground where comfort is redefined and independence is encouraged but not rushed. Witnessing this transformation requires patience and often quiet shifts in how we parent. We must accept that though our children may no longer be 'small,' they still deeply value our respect and reassurance in new ways. Ultimately, successfully parenting through this phase means staying attentive to subtle cues and offering love that adapts rather than resists. It is less about holding them tightly and more about walking alongside them, acknowledging their growth while remaining a constant source of support.
