Tank The Pancake
Bearded dragons are truly unique, intriguing, intelligent, and strongly misunderstood little reptiles.
Tank here, is a rescue & is also missing a good bit of his tail. Since their upper body (from nose to hips) is supposed to be as long as their tail... we think he is missing at least 3-5 inches.
He loves superworms & dubia roaches the most. But he will definitely dive headfirst into a bowl of salad 😆 especially if it has arugula in it!!! He is about 2-3 years old. He likes to bask in the window of our apartment and stare out the window at the mountains in the background. He is also small for his age, so the vet thinks he was the runt of the litter.
Something I find cool about Bearded dragons in general is that they change color depending on their mood or how they feel. Kinda like a living breathing mood ring 😆 Their body will become darker when agitated. And their beards will become black if they are pissed or feel threatened. They will also inflate/puff out the beard, flatten their bodies, and expand their abdomen/tummy till they eventually look like a spikey pancake.
Bearded dragons like Tank not only make fascinating pets but also exhibit a range of behaviors that reflect their unique adaptations. Their ability to change color and puff out their beards serves as an important form of communication, signaling emotions from stress to dominance. This natural defense mechanism helps them deter predators and establish territory in the wild. In captivity, providing the right environment is crucial for their well-being. A basking spot with ample UVB lighting mimics their natural sun exposure, which helps regulate temperature and supports their metabolism. Offering a varied diet consisting of insects like superworms and dubia roaches—as Tank enjoys—alongside leafy greens such as arugula, ensures they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and health. Rescued bearded dragons, especially those like Tank who have experienced tail loss, may need extra care and monitoring. Tail injuries can result from accidents or previous neglect but, with attentive care, they can live long, healthy lives. Regular vet check-ups help track their growth and detect any health concerns early. Bearded dragons are known for their affectionate and curious personalities, often enjoying opportunities to bask conveniently by windows to observe their surroundings, much like Tank gazes at the distant mountains. Understanding their behavior and needs creates a rewarding bond between owner and pet, highlighting why these reptiles are cherished companions worldwide.
