After indulging a bit during Thanksgiving, I felt so motivated to hit the gym and put all that fuel to good use with a fantastic leg day! As a mom-to-be at 27 weeks pregnant, staying active is super important for me, not just for physical health but for mental well-being too. Every workout feels like a celebration of my body's strength and what it's capable of.
Leg days during pregnancy are truly a game-changer. Strengthening your glutes and quads can help immensely with carrying the extra weight, improving posture, and even preparing your body for labor. Plus, it boosts circulation, which can help with those pesky swollen ankles!
My routine today was a 25-minute AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) that really challenged me in the best way. I focused on exercises like Back Squats, which are fantastic for overall lower body strength. I always make sure to use a comfortable stance, typically wider than usual, to accommodate my growing belly and maintain balance. Form over heavy weight is key here!
Then came Hip Thrusts, incredible for glute activation. I use a bench and keep the weight manageable, really focusing on squeezing at the top. For Static Lunges, I found that they really help with stability and unilateral strength, which is so beneficial for everyday movements. Romanian Deadlifts (RDLs) are another favorite for hamstrings and glutes, but I keep the weight light and focus on the hinge movement, ensuring my back stays neutral.
Bulgarian Split Squats are a fantastic single-leg exercise. They can be tricky for balance, so I often use a wall or a stable object for support. And finally, Squat Pulses! These are brilliant for building endurance in your squat position. After a full squat, I just do small, controlled up-and-down movements at the bottom range. They really make your muscles burn and are excellent for strengthening the muscles around your knees and hips, which is crucial for expecting mothers. For any woman looking to incorporate squat pulses into her workout, remember to keep your core engaged and your back straight, even with the small movements.
You might be wondering about other machines, like the Leg Press for expecting parents. While I didn't include it today, the leg press can be a great option for building lower body strength during pregnancy, provided you use proper form and avoid lying flat on your back, especially as your belly grows. If your machine requires you to lie completely flat, choose an incline leg press or stick to standing exercises like squats and lunges. Always listen to your body – if something feels uncomfortable or causes dizziness, stop immediately. And, of course, a quick chat with your doctor or a prenatal fitness expert is always a good idea before starting any new routine.
Remember to stay super hydrated throughout your workout, especially when pregnant. Warm-ups and cool-downs are also non-negotiable. Pregnancy is a journey, and every body is different, so what works for one person might not work for another. The important thing is to move, stay active, and feel good. My Apple Watch tracked a solid 50-minute workout today, burning over 300 active calories, and I feel energized and ready to take on the rest of my day! Keep moving, mamas!
