Taking The Semester One Day at a Time

So starting school has been exhausting especially while being a full time mom and employee. Yet, it been going better than expected. I’m trying to focus of studying techniques that actually work for me since it’s been so long since I’ve had to actively study. I have a test coming up so I’ve spent my Saturday at the library going over some chapter.

* The library has been my BEST friend. It can get so overwhelming when I’m home, so I take the time to book a study room for a minimum of 2 hrs to get as much done as possible.

... Read moreIt's tough, right? Balancing being a full-time mom, an employee, and pursuing your dreams of nursing school feels like running a marathon while juggling flaming torches. But trust me, it's not impossible to master this 'mommy track' and excel in your studies. I’ve been there, spending countless Saturday mornings poring over textbooks, trying to make every minute count for crucial test prep. One of the biggest game-changers for me has been optimizing my study sessions. Instead of just passively reading, I've embraced active learning techniques. For instance, after reading a chapter, I immediately try to recall the main points without looking back. This could be by writing them down, explaining them out loud to an imaginary student (or even my kids if they're playing nearby!), or creating flashcards. This method, known as active recall, is incredibly effective for solidifying information, especially when you're short on time. Paired with spaced repetition – reviewing material at increasing intervals – it's a powerful duo for test prep. Another crucial aspect of mastering this balancing act is carving out dedicated study time. Like the original post mentioned, the library has become my sanctuary. Booking a study room, even for just two hours, creates a mental and physical boundary from the chaos at home. But what about at home? I've found success in utilizing tiny pockets of time. While dinner is simmering, I might review flashcards. During my kids' quiet play time or nap time, I can squeeze in a quick lecture review. It's not about having huge blocks of uninterrupted time (a luxury for most moms!), but about consistently showing up and making the most of the minutes you have. Beyond just studying, mastering the 'mommy track' involves building a robust support system and practicing radical self-care. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your partner, family, or friends. Whether it's watching the kids for an hour while you study or bringing over a meal, every bit of support frees up mental energy. And self-care isn't selfish; it’s essential for preventing burnout. This could be as simple as a 15-minute walk, listening to your favorite podcast, or enjoying a cup of tea in silence. Remember, a well-rested and less stressed mom is a more effective student. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and with the right strategies, you can absolutely succeed.
