Ground beef freezer prep

If you had not started doing this then you need to!

I get a big roll of ground beef from Sam club and sort it out in portions

These are half a pound up to 1 pound of meat

I was able to get 12 quarts bags out of it!

This is just for me I’m doing this for so if you have a partner or a family maybe sort it out in 2-3 lbs might suits you better

use bigger freezer bags if needed too as well!

How long it last me? That depends how much I go through it! I had one round got me four months.

... Read moreOkay, so you've seen my freezer prep, but let me tell you why flattening those ground beef portions is an absolute game-changer! It's not just about looking neat in your freezer; it's about pure efficiency and making your life so much easier. When you flatten ground beef into a thin, even layer in a freezer bag, it freezes much faster, which helps prevent ice crystals and freezer burn. But the real magic happens when you need to thaw it – a flattened bag thaws in a fraction of the time compared to a bulky, frozen block. This means less waiting around when dinner time rolls around! Speaking of storing, a common question I get is 'how long is ground beef good in the freezer?' According to food safety experts, raw ground beef can safely be stored at 0°F (-18°C) or below for 3-4 months for best quality, though it will remain safe indefinitely if kept constantly frozen. After 4 months, the quality might start to decline slightly, but it's still safe to eat. If you're freezing cooked ground beef, it generally lasts a bit longer, up to 2-3 months. Just make sure everything is properly sealed to avoid freezer burn, which can dry out the meat and affect its texture and flavor. When I'm prepping these, I always use heavy-duty freezer bags – they really make a difference in preventing freezer burn. After adding your desired portion of ground beef, press out as much air as possible before sealing. This further protects the meat from drying out. And don't forget to LABEL them! Seriously, I learned this the hard way. Write the date you froze it and the weight (e.g., '1 lb Ground Beef - 10/26/23') on each bag. It's a lifesaver when you're trying to figure out what's what in a packed freezer and ensures you use the oldest meat first. The OCR recognized my neatly labeled, flattened freezer bags, and it's truly a testament to how crucial this step is for good organization. My article mentioned half-pound to one-pound portions, which works great for me as a single person. But if you have a family, think about what sizes you use most often. Maybe 1.5 lbs for a quick taco night or 2 lbs for a big batch of chili or spaghetti sauce. Flattening still works perfectly for larger amounts – just use bigger freezer bags! The key is customizing your portions to your typical meal needs. This strategy isn't just about saving money at the store; it's about making weeknight dinners stress-free and preventing food waste by having perfectly portioned meat ready to go. It's super practical and keeps your food fresh and accessible.

My partner and I do something similar but we usually do 1lb portions. I'll have to try splitting them into 0.5lb next time!
