Low Porosity Talk: Wash Day Mistakes Edition

Low Porosity Talk is my ongoing educational series for beginners who feel stuck, confused, and tired of trial and error with their low porosity hair. Each edition focuses on one core issue.

This week: Wash Day Mistakes.

If your low porosity hair feels dry right after wash day, it's probably not your conditioner.

It's buildup.

Low porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles. Because of this, product buildup forms easily and moisture penetrates slowly. When buildup sits on the hair shaft, deep conditioners cannot absorb properly.

Common signs of buildup on low porosity hair:

- Hair feels heavy but dry

- Water beads more than usual or hair struggles to fully saturate

- Products suddenly "stop working"

- Hair looks dull even after conditioning

This is why treating every wash day the same keeps you stuck.

Dry hair and buildup are not the same problem, and they require completely different approaches. When you deep condition over buildup, moisture cannot penetrate. When you add more products without clarifying, the cycle continues.

Learning how to read your hair before wash day is foundational for healthy low porosity hair, moisture retention, and length retention.

That logic is exactly why created The Low Porosity Wash Day Decision Tree™, so you can decide what

your hair actually needs before wash day instead of guessing and restarting every time something feels off.

If you're new here, start with my free Low Porosity Quick Start Guide in my bio. It walks you through the foundation step by step.

Day 2 drops tomorrow.

Save this, follow the series, and start building a real foundation for your low porosity hair.

... Read moreMy journey with low porosity hair used to be a constant struggle. For years, I just couldn't understand why my hair felt dry immediately after wash day, no matter how much conditioner I used! If you're wondering, 'Do I even have low porosity hair?', an easy test you can do at home is the water float test. Take a clean strand of hair and drop it into a glass of water. If it floats on top for a few minutes before sinking, you likely have low porosity hair. Understanding this was my first step to truly providing "proper care" for my hair. Once I figured out my hair type, I realized the original article hit the nail on the head: it wasn't about more moisture, but about tackling *buildup*. I learned that heavyweight products, even those marketed for "moisture," often just sat on my strands, making them feel heavy and waxy instead of hydrated. Now, I always check ingredients for silicones that aren't water-soluble and prefer lighter, humectant-rich formulas. My "wash day decision" framework starts before I even step into the shower. I examine my hair: Does it feel dull? Is it struggling to absorb water? Are my styling products just sitting on top? If I notice any of these signs, especially that heavy, waxy feeling, I know it's time to clarify first. This is crucial because, as I learned painfully, deep conditioning on coated hair is utterly ineffective. It's like putting a bandage on a dirty wound – it won't help! For a clarifying wash, I use a gentle clarifying shampoo, focusing on my scalp and then working it down the strands. After rinsing thoroughly with warm water (which helps open those tight cuticles!), I follow up with a protein-free deep conditioner. I always apply it to damp, not soaking wet, hair to ensure better absorption, and I often use a heat cap for 15-20 minutes. This little trick has been a game-changer! On weeks when my hair feels relatively clean and just needs a refresh, I opt for a moisturizing shampoo instead of a clarifier. This flexible approach, recognizing that not every wash day is the same, truly transformed my hair's health. It's all about providing the "right wash for the right problem." Finally, after rinsing out my deep conditioner, I always finish with a cold rinse to help seal the cuticles and lock in that hard-earned moisture. Then, I apply my leave-in conditioner and seal with a light oil. This structured approach, a kind of personal "wash day decision tree," has moved my low porosity hair from perpetually dry to consistently soft and moisturized. I hope my experience helps you too!

Low Porosity Talk: Wash Day Mistakes - Day 2
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make with low porosity hair is using the same wash routine every single week. Low porosity hair has tightly compacted cuticles. Because moisture penetrates slowly and buildup forms easily, your hair’s needs shift depending on what is happening that week.
