3 Lies I Believed About Motherhood And What Helped

Becoming a mom changed me, but healing helped me come back home to myself.

There’s the kind of motherhood you imagine.

And then there’s the kind that breaks you open in ways you didn’t see coming.

Before I had my babies, I carried a lot of lies—about what kind of mom I should be, what my life should look like, and who I was allowed to become once I had kids.

Some of those lies nearly broke me.

But healing? That brought me back.

Here are 3 of the biggest lies I believed about motherhood—and the truths that helped me finally let go of the shame:

1. Lie: “A good mom never needs a break.”

I thought needing space meant I was selfish.

That taking a moment to breathe made me a bad mom.

That somehow, the “perfect” mother had an unlimited tank of patience and energy.

But I learned the hard way:

A mom who never takes a break becomes a mom who breaks.

What helped me heal:

Letting go of guilt.

Learning that rest isn’t selfish—it’s survival.

That asking for help is not a weakness. It’s wisdom.

Now I tell myself:

My kids don’t need a perfect mom. They need a present one.

And presence only happens when I care for me, too.

2. Lie: “If I struggle, I’m failing.”

No one told me how heavy motherhood can feel sometimes.

The sleepless nights. The invisible mental load. The identity crisis.

I thought if I wasn’t smiling through it all, I was doing something wrong.

But now I know:

Struggling doesn’t mean I’m failing.

It means I’m human. It means I’m loving with everything I have.

It means I’m showing up, even when it’s hard.

What helped me heal:

Talking about it.

Letting go of the silent suffering and saying, “Me too” when other moms got real.

Therapy. Support. Community.

Owning my truth and learning that strength doesn’t mean silence.

3. Lie: “I have to lose myself to be a good mom.”

For a long time, I thought motherhood meant erasing who I was.

I gave everything to everyone else until I didn’t even recognize myself in the mirror.

No hobbies. No goals. Just survival.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

Losing yourself isn’t noble. It’s a warning sign.

You can be a good mom and have dreams.

You can love your kids fiercely and still be your own person.

What helped me heal:

Permission.

To get back into things that made me feel alive.

To explore my creativity, my voice, my body, my mind—outside of motherhood.

Because when my kids see me come alive,

they learn that women don’t disappear when they become moms.

They grow. They evolve. They rise.

Healing isn’t always big and dramatic.

Sometimes it’s quiet.

Sometimes it’s letting yourself cry in the car.

Sometimes it’s saying no without explaining.

Sometimes it’s saying yes to yourself.

If you’re a mom carrying lies you didn’t even know were lies—

you’re not alone.

And you’re allowed to lay them down.

You’re allowed to heal.

Tell me in the comments: What lies did you believe about motherhood? What truth are you learning now? 💬💛

2025/7/10 Edited to

... Read moreMotherhood is a profound transformation that brings immense joy, challenges, and growth. Many mothers face silent struggles fueled by societal expectations and internalized myths about what it means to be a "good mom." The lies explored here—believing that needing a break is selfish, struggling means failure, and losing oneself is necessary for motherhood—are common misconceptions that contribute to unnecessary stress and feelings of isolation. Research shows that maternal well-being significantly affects not only the mother’s health but also child development and family dynamics. Experts emphasize the importance of acknowledging the mental load of parenting, advocating for self-care, open communication, and support networks to sustain emotional resilience. Healing begins with rejecting stigma around asking for help and recognizing that presence and connection with children flourish when moms prioritize their own physical and mental health. Therapeutic approaches such as counseling, support groups, and mindfulness practices can empower mothers to overcome shame and self-judgment. Surrounding oneself with a community who openly discusses the complexities of motherhood helps normalize the struggles and fosters a culture of collective healing. Additionally, maintaining personal interests and identity outside parenting enriches both the mother’s and children’s lives by modeling healthy boundaries and self-expression. Ultimately, the journey of motherhood is not about perfection but about ongoing growth, compassion, and reclaiming one’s own voice amidst parenthood. Breaking free from myths opens the path to a more authentic, joyful, and sustainable experience. For any mother carrying hidden burdens or feeling overwhelmed, this message offers reassurance—healing is possible, and embracing truth leads to strength and renewal.
