it’s not because i hate being a mom to a boy. (being a MOM is one of my favorite things) but because the internet turned “boy mom” into something weird!
the thing is no one blinks when a mom calls herself a girl mom. it’s cute. it’s normal. it’s aesthetic. it’s her “mini”
but if a mom says boy mom, suddenly she’s obsessed with her son, or “raising her little king,” or being “his first love.”
And it is THAT version of a boy mom is what gave the rest of us a bad rep!!
by default, i am a boy mom. I have one child and he’s a boy.
buuuut I am not that type of boy mom.
Ii’m not romanticizing my son. i’m not weirdly claiming him. i’m just… a mom who happens to have a boy.
i wish we could reset the term and let it be neutral again.. just like “girl mom.”
do you think the boy-mom stereotype has gotten out of hand?
... Read moreBeing a boy mom should be as simple and neutral as being a girl mom, but in recent years, the phrase "boy mom" has taken on more complicated and sometimes problematic meanings. Many women who proudly identify as "boy moms" express frustration because the term has become associated with overly romanticized or possessive attitudes—such as 'raising my little king' or being 'his first love'—which can make others view the entire group unfairly.
One important point to consider is that motherhood, regardless of a child’s gender, can look different for each parent. Some moms might naturally have a more aesthetic or cute way of expressing their bond, like those who proudly call themselves "girl moms". However, the "boy mom" identity should not be characterized by any single stereotype. It should be a neutral term that simply acknowledges the gender of the child, without attaching any intense or problematic narratives.
This stereotype can also affect how society views and discusses parenting styles. When internet culture amplifies certain phrases and presents them as the norm, it often sidelines real, diverse stories of parenting. Many boy moms don’t romanticize their children in unusual ways—they just take pride in being a parent to a boy, focusing on supporting and nurturing their child without the added layers of public dramatization or labeling.
Resetting this term to something neutral and widely accepted again would serve to benefit all mothers. It promotes inclusivity and understanding, reducing unnecessary judgement. More importantly, it reminds parents and society that the identity of "boy mom" is simply about motherhood and love in its many forms—not about fitting into a narrative shaped by online trends or stereotypes.
If you are a boy mom or know one, reflect on how this label fits your parenting experience. Every parent’s story is unique and valid, and dismantling stereotypes helps create a more supportive community. This conversation also opens up a dialogue about how social media influences parenting identities and encourages us to reclaim these terms in a way that feels authentic and respectful.
Ultimately, the goal is to embrace "boy mom" as a genuine, honest, and neutral descriptor, without the pressures of unrealistic expectations or backlash. Motherhood is about the connection between a parent and child, no matter what label is used.
