Burnout Doesn’t Happen Overnight…

Burnout isn’t random.

It’s a process—and most people don’t see it until it’s too late.

It starts with:

👉 Proving yourself

👉 Pushing harder

👉 Ignoring your needs

Then slowly turns into:

• Self-neglect

• Internal conflict

• Emotional detachment

And eventually…

You don’t feel like yourself anymore.

The truth?

Burnout isn’t a work problem.

It’s a boundary + awareness problem.

If you can recognize the early stages…

you can change the outcome.

Protect your energy before you’re forced to recover it.

Which stage have you felt before?

... Read moreBurnout often feels like an invisible enemy slowly creeping into your life, starting with seemingly small actions like pushing harder to prove your worth or ignoring your personal needs. From my experience, these early stages can be the hardest to notice because you might still be functioning well externally, while internally, your energy reserves are quietly draining. The 12 stages of burnout, as outlined by Susan Chen, beautifully detail how this process unfolds—from overworking and resting feeling like weakness, through denial and withdrawal, to losing oneself completely. I found that once I reached the stages of self-neglect and internal conflict, it became clear that burnout was not just about work stress but a deeper boundary and awareness issue. It involves how we manage our energy and set limits in both our personal and professional lives. A critical realization I had was that burnout is not simply a problem of workload but a signal that my boundaries were too blurred and self-awareness too low. By actively tuning into how I felt—physically, mentally, and emotionally—I learned to catch burnout’s early signs like irritability, mood shifts, and feeling emotionally detached. These signals suggested the need to pause and prioritize self-care rather than push harder. Incorporating mindful practices such as regular breaks, balanced nutrition, and respectful time for rest has been essential in reversing burnout tendencies. Sharing openly about these struggles with trusted friends or mentors also helped break the isolation that the withdrawal stage of burnout often brings. For anyone feeling stuck in the grind, understanding these burnout stages and their symptoms can empower you to act before reaching collapse. Remember, protecting your energy is a proactive step—not just a recovery process after burnout hits. Prioritize your mental health, embrace healthy boundaries, and allow yourself grace to maintain well-being and fulfillment in all areas of life.

i was texting my life I accidentally lost it! Oh well. It helped me to write/ typed it to the wind! I realize how much your listed page was so helpful to me. and the burnt out cycle, I must be the queen. long story short, I think it is GRIEF after losing my husband to heart complications at 50 years old. I found him on that day in our bathroom, after I got home from teaching school, it was to late for the EMTs. It had been several hours. I'll never forget that image, and I am the loneliest somebody I know! I'm glad I came upon your posts and I write ALOT of notes myself about aging, and just life lessons that "life" brings. I'm thankful to be a Christian, as was my husband, and now I I'm enjoying reading posts like you have posted. I hate a typewriter. I'm just a pen and paper thinker/wtiter. I know that is why your post caught my eye! I can drown in my broken heart, I am lonely, don't love being myself, substitute teach , or singing.but tomorrow is a brand new day, and I will go for a walk in the morning sun before the day gets hot! ....and I will be proud of myself!! listen to David Guzik on You Tube reading and read along in my Bible. the Book of Proverbs... just 1 , 1 chapter every day of the 31 chapters by the day of the month it is. Today, April 15 will be Proverbs , Chapter 15. I will listen to him read the verses in the chapter and explain them and , MAN has that helped me. It is amazing what God says in his word that we can miss, and I love watching/ listening to him discuss life through God's Word! It's so prevalent for today.Go pay your taxes!!! I already did 2 days ago so Uncle Sam won't be hunting for me! I'm so happy to have a great CPA!! have a great day!
