we are engaged! 💍

in my last post about a month and a half ago, i shared that we booked our solemnisation date.

fast forward to 19/11… he proposed 🤍

ngl, i kinda knew it was coming. we were exactly 3 months away from our solemnisation and we also had a japan trip coming up. so… if not now then when right?

also if i’m being very honest, i think i lowkey orchestrated my own proposal 🥲

for those who don’t know (and yes, shameless plug), my family does bespoke jewellery. so it only felt right that my engagement ring was done by my dad (@/glister.jewellery). how this ring came about though… that’s a story for another day 🤍

i reminded my now fiancé 🤭 about 2 weeks before the trip that if he had any intention to propose in japan, he had to let my dad know his deadline. otherwise my dad would just take his own sweet time and by the time japan came… the ring would still NOT BE READY.

but ofc he did tell my dad eventually, and sure enough my dad rushed it out. by then i already knew it was gna happen in japan, just not sure when or how.

both of us are pretty spontaneous people, so i knew this proposal wasn’t gna be anything super elaborate. and i was honestly fine with that.

on 19/11, we planned to go fushimi inari. since we both enjoy hiking, we decided to climb all the way to the peak of mt inari. this was actually where he initially wanted to propose but… the view was so underwhelming it didn’t happen 💀

halfway up, my mom and sis decided they didn’t want to go any further and would wait for us to come back down. then this very sus convo happened right in front of me:

dad: huh why don’t want go up? all go up la

b: no need la, nvm, we go up can already

dad: no but are you going to?

b: ……no i’m not going to

meanwhile i was just standing there listening like 🧍🏻‍♀️ pretending i didn’t know what they were talking about 😂

after reaching the peak and coming back down, it was around 4pm and all we had was coffee and onigiris from family mart. we were STARVING. but somehow all the food places at fushimi inari closed super early. we still had time and were already in kyoto, so we decided to head to gion instead.

my dad wanted unagi so we were just randomly googling and found a restaurant nearby. on the way there, we passed by maruyama park. it wasn’t even on our itinerary but it was sooo pretty.

walking formation was dad, b and me in front, with my mom and sis wayyyyy at the back taking photos.

dad: eh this place very nice to take photos

dad: wait ah i go in front see if got nicer spot

*walks forward then comes back*

dad: ok la here nice

dad: come take family photo

b: ok ah? here ah? *stands beside me*

dad: ya here here take photo

mom: (finally catches up and whips out her phone)

sis: what’s going on

b: this is what’s going on *takes out ring box*

sis: ohhhhh

me: *immediately starts bawling*

i honestly didn’t think i would cry because i already knew it was coming, but somehow in that moment the tears just came 😂

it’s been almost 3 weeks since the proposal and i’ve been wearing the ring every single day since. i still catch myself rewatching the videos, looking through the photos and replaying the moment in my head.

it was simple, nothing extravagant. just my family there, not too crowded, and us in our own little bubble.

younger me would’ve been so upset there were no friends, no photographers, no videographers. but 28 year old me is so, so happy with how it happened and where it happened.

wouldn’t change a thing 🤍

Maruyama Park Japanese Gardens
2025/12/12 Edited to

... Read moreJapanese marriage proposals often blend tradition with personal touches, which made our experience truly special. While many think of elaborate public displays or scripted events, I realized proposals can be beautiful in their simplicity and intimacy. In traditional Japanese culture, there is a custom called 'Yuino'—an engagement ceremony where families exchange gifts symbolizing the upcoming union. Although we didn't have a formal Yuino, having my father craft the ring was like honoring this cultural respect for family involvement. It's also common for proposals in Japan to be private moments rather than public spectacles. Our spontaneous setting at Maruyama Park reflected this natural and personal approach. The beauty of the surroundings enhanced the genuine emotions shared. Planning a marriage proposal in Japan may feel daunting, but embracing spontaneity and honoring family connections can make the experience authentic and memorable. Whether it's through a personalized ring, a quiet hike, or simply being together, these elements hold deep meaning in Japanese customs. Reflecting on our journey, I encourage others to focus on what truly matters—the bonds between you and your loved ones. Simple moments can create lifelong memories that surpass any grand gesture.

It took a perfect proposal to understand love.
Yes, the guy in all my previous posts is my partner. And yes—we are now engaged. It took a perfectly executed engagement for me to begin to understand love. I held back from writing because words felt inadequate. They always do when you try to capture a once-in-a-lifetime moment—the kind tha
