“Your magnesium is normal." Four words that have reassured a lot of tired people into staying tired.

Only ~1% of your body's magnesium is in your blood. The other 99% lives in bone and tissue — and your body will strip-mine your cells to keep that serum number looking fine. So the test reads normal while your stores quietly run down. It's a cofactor for 300+ reactions, and most deficiency never gets caught.

If you've been told your levels are fine but still feel wired and depleted, the test isn't the whole story.

Ever had "normal" bloodwork that didn't match how you felt? 👇

... Read moreMany people feel exhausted and depleted despite being told their magnesium levels are "normal" by blood tests. This is because standard serum magnesium tests measure only about 1% of the magnesium in the body, as most magnesium resides in bones and tissues. The body tightly regulates magnesium in the blood, often sacrificing cellular stores to maintain normal serum levels. This discrepancy means that even with "normal" test results, magnesium deficiency can silently persist, affecting critical body functions. Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions, influencing muscle and nerve function, energy production, and bone health. Deficiency symptoms can include fatigue, muscle cramps, irritability, and sleep disturbances—signs that many overlook or attribute to other causes. Functional medicine approaches often advocate for evaluating magnesium status through alternative methods, such as intracellular magnesium testing or assessing clinical symptoms alongside tests. Personally, I found that focusing purely on blood magnesium levels did not capture my symptoms. Working with a healthcare provider who understands magnesium kinetics helped identify a subclinical deficiency. Supplementing with magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, alongside targeted supplements, improved my energy and reduced nighttime muscle cramps. This experience highlights the importance of recognizing that "normal" blood magnesium does not always mean optimal magnesium status. If you feel depleted despite normal test results, exploring magnesium's deeper role and alternative testing options may reveal the root cause and help restore vitality.
