This is because standard serum magnesium tests measure only about 1% of the magnesium in the body, as most magnesium resides in bones and tissues. The body tightly regulates magnesium in the blood, often sacrificing cellular stores to maintain normal serum levels. This discrepancy means that even with "normal" test results, magnesium deficiency can silently persist, affecting critical body functions. Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions, influencing muscle and nerve function, energy production, and bone health. Deficiency symptoms can include fatigue, muscle cramps, irritability, and sleep disturbances—signs that many overlook or attribute to other causes. Functional medicine approaches often advocate for evaluating magnesium status through alternative methods, such as intracellular magnesium testing or assessing clinical symptoms alongside tests. Personally, I found that focusing purely on blood magnesium levels did not capture my symptoms. Working with a healthcare provider who understands magnesium kinetics helped identify a subclinical deficiency.
