“No one tells you advocacy is a full-time job.

... Read moreAdvocacy for autistic individuals is often underestimated, yet it requires ongoing dedication that extends well beyond childhood. From my experience, supporting an autistic person means constantly navigating systems, educating others, and ensuring access to resources that meet evolving needs. It's not just about early intervention but about sustaining inclusion throughout life. One key challenge is that support services frequently end when individuals reach 18, leaving many autistic adults without necessary resources. This gap can create significant stress for both adults and their caregivers, as adult services are less defined and more difficult to access. Advocacy becomes a full-time role in ensuring that these gaps are addressed, fighting for rights and accommodations in education, employment, healthcare, and community life. Another important aspect is the role of the caregiver. Caregivers need their own support system to manage the emotional and physical demands of lifelong advocacy. Connecting with peer groups, like #caregiversupport, helps share strategies and offers much-needed encouragement. Inclusion is truly lifelong. Autistic adults benefit significantly from environments that accommodate diverse needs and promote independence, whether in social settings or workplaces. When we advocate for these inclusive environments, we’re pushing for a society that values every individual’s contribution. Sharing experiences and raising awareness, particularly through community forums and discussions around autistic women and adults, creates a stronger support network. These conversations, often centered around hashtags like #autisticwomen and #autisticadult, highlight personal stories that can inspire and educate others. Ultimately, advocacy is a continuous journey that demands resilience and compassion. For anyone involved, understanding the full scope of needs and rallying for lifelong inclusion makes a meaningful difference in the lives of autistic people and their families.

The image introduces the concept of distinguishing toddler independence from 'being difficult,' stating that most 'problem behavior' is healthy development in disguise. It sets the stage for understanding child development.
This image explains the science behind toddler independence, highlighting that autonomy development between ages 2-5 is a biological drive. It notes that resisting help and saying 'no' are signs of healthy development, per Erikson's theory.
This image describes behavior #1, 'I do it MYSELF!' refusing help. It explains this as building competence and self-efficacy, suggesting parents offer choices like 'Want me to help or watch?' to support confidence.
Toddler Defiance or Healthy Independence?
Before you label it “defiance” — pause. ⏱️ “I do it MYSELF.” Saying no to everything. Changing their mind three times in 30 seconds. Ignoring you completely. These behaviors feel exhausting and disrespectful. But most of the time? They’re not defiance at all. They’re independence showing up. 🌱
