Don’t know when to distance yourself??

It can be difficult to know when you should distance yourself from a person. I personally still find it hard sometimes but this is how I evaluate my relationships and figure out how close I want to keep someone.

1.) Do you trust them?

If you are evaluating a relationship/friendship and realize you can’t trust them you may want to rethink how close you are to them and if they belong in your life. If you can trust them that’s a great sign that they’re worth keeping close.

2.) Do they support you?

Whenever you talk about good news do they brush you off? Or dismiss you? Or are they excited to see you prosper? You want to keep people around who want to see you happy and grow.

3.) How do they treat you?

Look at their behavior towards you when in a disagreement, can you challenge each other and talk about difficult issues? If other people are around does their behavior change towards you? You want friends that are genuine.

4.) Do you like them?

It may seem superficial but it’s better to be honest with yourself. You don’t have to be mean but if you genuinely don’t like someone it’s best not to pretend because eventually that can create a passive aggressive attitude.

5.) Do they value you?

Lastly but certainly most important. Do you ignore you or disappear randomly/during arguments and then reappear randomly? Do you feel anxious when you might have upset them? You want to make sure that your close circle is full of people who value you as much as you value them.

... Read moreRecognizing when to distance yourself from certain people can be pivotal for your emotional and mental well-being. Relationships can be complex, filled with highs and lows that influence your state of mind. One of the first steps in evaluating your relationships is understanding trust. Trust lays the foundation for any strong relationship; without it, the connection can feel unstable. If you find yourself doubting someone’s integrity or loyalty, it may be a good time to reconsider how much of yourself you invest in that relationship. Support is another critical aspect; genuine friends celebrate your achievements and uplift you during difficult times. If someone frequently dismisses your successes or only reaches out during their need, consider their role in your life. Take note of how people treat you during conflicts or disagreements — supportive individuals encourage open dialogues while toxic relationships can lead to confusion and emotional distress. It’s also essential to reflect on your feelings. Do you enjoy their company? Liking someone is fundamental for any friendship. Disguising your feelings may lead to resentment down the line. Lastly, mutual value is paramount. A healthy relationship should involve a balance where both parties feel appreciated. If you consistently feel undervalued or anxious around certain individuals, take a step back and reassess their importance in your life. Managing relationships effectively is crucial for maintaining your mental health and ensuring your social circle comprises those who genuinely care about your well-being and growth. It's never easy to make these decisions, but prioritizing your well-being is essential.
