How We Made Long Distance Work For a Year

Long distance can be tough. My partner and I experienced long distance for a year during our relationship and we grew stronger from it. Here are some ways we made long distance work.

01. Be Clear Where The Relationship Is Headed

If you two are going to be separated for a while, make sure you are both clear on how long that will be and when you hope to come together. Do you both hope to become serious? Make sure that is also clear and be honest about your plans for the future when you one day reconnect in the future.

02. Talk Over Text

Texting can be a quick and convenient way to communicate, but there are a lot of nuances to it that can cause miscommunication especially with long distance. Whether it is for 2 hours or 2 minutes, prioritize communicating on calls or FaceTime as much as possible over text. Try to make this a consistent thing so you both know when to make time in the day for each other.

03. Send Care Packages

When it's not possibly to physically see each other, sending gifts of things that remind you of your partner are a great alternative to strengthen your bond from a distance. My partner and I would send each other care packages every other month as a way to express our love and care. For me, it felt like getting a surprise subscription box and it was a really fun way to share what we thought about each gift.

Here are some additional strategies to enhance your long-distance relationship: 1. Schedule Regular Visits: Whenever possible, plan visits to each other. Having something to look forward to can help ease the yearning that comes from being apart. If visits aren't feasible often, consider virtual date nights where you share a meal over a video call. 2. Share Experiences: Engage in activities together remotely, such as watching movies, playing online games, or reading the same book. Sharing these experiences can help create a sense of togetherness even when miles apart. 3. Celebrate Milestones: Don't forget to celebrate anniversaries and special occasions even when you’re apart. Sending each other surprises or planning virtual celebrations can keep the romance alive and maintain the bond you share. 4. Trust and Honesty: Maintaining trust is crucial in a long-distance relationship. Address any insecurities with open and honest discussions. Make sure both partners feel comfortable expressing their feelings, needs, and boundaries. 5. Explore New Communication Tools: Use various platforms to keep communication fresh. Consider trying voice messages, video notes, or even handwritten letters to add a personal touch to your interactions. By incorporating these strategies with your established practices, you can cultivate a stronger bond that withstands the distance, ultimately improving your relationship's resilience and connection.
