It truly fills my heart to know that each puppy I raise is off to a wonderful new chapter, bringing happiness to a loving family. That moment when a new family meets their puppy and their faces light up – it's just pure magic, and it's why I dedicate myself to this journey. While my part is preparing these little ones for their big debut, I also know that for new puppy parents, bringing a furry friend home is an incredibly exciting, yet sometimes overwhelming, experience! If you're one of those excited new puppy parents, I can imagine you're asking, 'What's the very first thing I should do when my puppy arrives?' It's a fantastic question, and planning ahead makes all the difference for a smooth transition. From my experience and seeing how my puppies thrive, here are some tips for those first precious moments and weeks: First, prepare a 'welcome home' space before they even arrive. This means having a cozy crate or a designated puppy-proofed area ready. Include a soft blanket, food and water bowls, and a few safe chew toys. This gives your new puppy a secure sanctuary to retreat to when they feel overwhelmed. When your puppy first comes home, resist the urge for too much excitement. Keep introductions calm. One of the absolute first things you should do, even before going inside, is to take them out for a potty break in your designated potty spot. This helps establish good habits right away. Praise them enthusiastically if they go! Once inside, let them explore their new safe space quietly. Don't overwhelm them with visitors or too much handling. Allow them to sniff around and get comfortable. Establishing a consistent routine from day one is key. This includes feeding times, potty breaks, and nap times. A predictable schedule helps puppies feel secure and makes potty training much easier. For example, take them out immediately after waking up, after eating, and before bedtime. Start with positive reinforcement training early. Simple commands like 'sit' and 'come' can be introduced gently. Socialization is also incredibly important during their early weeks. Safely introduce them to new sights, sounds, people, and vaccinated dogs (once your vet gives the okay). Finally, don't forget that crucial first vet visit. This should be scheduled shortly after bringing your puppy home. Your vet can check their health, administer any necessary vaccinations, and discuss preventative care. This early check-up ensures your puppy is healthy and sets them up for a long, happy life with you. Bringing a puppy home is an amazing adventure, full of love and learning.
