Over in Australia and New Zealand, the humble meat pie is a national icon! You'll find them everywhere, often filled with minced beef and gravy, sometimes with a dollop of tomato sauce on top. They're perfect for a quick lunch or a game day snack. But the world of meat pies doesn't stop there! In Ghana, where I've seen some incredible culinary creations, meat pies are a popular snack, often smaller in size with a slightly sweet and tender pastry, filled with spiced minced meat. They're absolutely bursting with flavor and make for a perfect grab-and-go treat. Then think about American pot pies – typically chicken pot pie, but often beef too – with their creamy, vegetable-laden fillings beneath a golden puff pastry crust. Or the delicious Empanadas from Latin America, which are essentially baked or fried pastry turnovers filled with various savory stuffings, often spiced ground meat. And for something truly unique, Tourtière from Quebec, Canada, is a fantastic double-crusted meat pie, traditionally made with spiced ground pork, beef, or wild game, often enjoyed during the holidays. So, what are the key ingredients for a fantastic meat pie? While it varies greatly by type, generally you'll need: a good quality pastry (shortcrust, puff pastry, or even a potato topping), a flavorful meat filling (ground beef, lamb, chicken, or pork are common), and a savory sauce or gravy to bind it all together. Beyond that, vegetables like onions, carrots, celery, peas, and potatoes are often added for texture and nutrition. The magic really happens with the seasonings – think herbs like thyme, rosemary, bay leaf, or spices like cumin, paprika, curry powder, and a good amount of salt and pepper. A dash of Worcestershire sauce or a splash of red wine can also elevate the flavors in a beef pie. Making meat pies at home can be such a rewarding experience.
