This recipe is called Mei-Ling Congee(美龄粥).
I tweaked the original recipe a bit
and here are the ingredients:
- Chinese yam (Shanyao): 80g
- Soybeans: 30g
- Oats: 20g
- Dried lily bulb(百合): 10g
- Rock sugar: 1 small piece (~5g)
- Water: 600 ml
I've personally found that incorporating traditional ingredients like Chinese yam (Shanyao) and dried lily bulb into recipes like this Mei-Ling Congee can be incredibly beneficial for both digestion and skin health. Chinese yam is known for its ability to strengthen the spleen and lungs, which in Traditional Chinese Medicine translates to improved nutrient absorption and complexion. The dried lily bulb not only adds a delicate sweetness but also has soothing properties that can help relieve dryness and promote restful sleep. When I prepare this congee, I like to soak the soybeans overnight to soften them, making the congee creamier and easier to digest. Adding oats introduces extra fiber, which supports gut health—a key component in maintaining clear, glowing skin. The small piece of rock sugar balances the flavors without overpowering the natural sweetness of the ingredients. This recipe is not only comforting but also fits well into a daily skincare routine from within. I often enjoy it as a light breakfast or an evening snack, especially during cooler months when my skin tends to feel dry. Preparing this Mei-Ling Congee at home gives me the satisfaction of using wholesome, natural ingredients that contribute to overall wellness and radiant skin.
