One of these swimming holes gets ⭐.

The difference wasn’t necessarily just the waterfall, it’s everything (and everyone) around it.
After hiking to hundreds of waterfalls across California, these are some of the best swim spots I’d recommend… and also some of the ones I’d probably skip.

Which one are you adding to your list?
Exploring California's swim holes is a unique adventure offering both refreshing dips and stunning natural scenery. From my personal experience hiking many waterfalls across California, I’ve learned that the best swim spots offer more than just beautiful water flows—they create a welcoming atmosphere that includes the surrounding environment and the community of visitors. While a majestic waterfall can be the main attraction, factors such as water clarity, accessibility, crowd size, and safety conditions can make or break the experience. I always recommend scouting out the conditions before jumping in, especially since river currents can fluctuate rapidly. Checking water temperature and flow speeds helps ensure a safe swim. One effective way to evaluate safety beforehand is to look for local signage and reports. Moreover, simple observations such as clear water without debris and absence of strong currents are good signs. Avoid areas where water looks murky or where you encounter warning signs. For those new to swimming in natural bodies of water, partnering with an experienced swimmer or joining guided trips can provide both fun and security. Remember to respect wildlife and leave no trace to preserve these beautiful spots for future visitors.
