Here’s how I manage my own inner elbow pain as a Physio
In my experience, increasing blood flow to the tendons around the elbow is crucial for effective healing, especially when dealing with conditions like golfer's elbow or medial epicondylitis. One of the best methods I've used is combining gentle, controlled exercises with manual techniques and advanced therapies. Firstly, I focus on banded wrist flexion exercises. Using a resistance band, I keep my elbow fixed at a 90-degree angle and slowly perform wrist flexion movements. This not only targets the forearm flexor muscles but also helps direct blood flow to the tendon attachment sites around the medial epicondyle. Repeating this for three sets of 10 repetitions has personally helped me maintain flexibility and reduce discomfort. Another technique I swear by is performing isometric holds for pronator muscles using a band. Holding a static contraction against resistance stimulates blood circulation without aggravating the tendon. For example, using a long lever position and holding for about 30 seconds, repeated multiple times, encourages healing at the pronator teres attachment. Self-release techniques are also vital. Applying pressure with your own hands or tools—from the inner elbow down the forearm flexors—helps ease muscle tightness and improves tissue mobility. I've found using massage balls or even leaning into a rolling device like a Smith machine can be very effective. Additionally, extracorporeal shockwave therapy has been a game-changer. It stimulates tissue repair through controlled mechanical pulses, which enhances blood flow and reduces chronic pain. I follow preset parameters tailored for epicondylitis, ensuring treatments are spaced about a week apart and repeated for several sessions to optimize results. Finally, individualizing rehab is key. Not every approach fits all, and it's important to listen to your body and modify exercises as necessary. Increasing tendon blood flow is a gradual process that combines physical therapy, manual care, and sometimes specialized devices. Reaching out to healthcare professionals when unsure can guide you through safe and effective recovery.
