What I would tell my SLP grad school self

2025/12/11 Edited to

... Read moreGrad school, especially for speech-language pathology (SLP), can feel overwhelming, but looking back, there are some key pieces of advice that could have helped ease the journey. One important reminder is to take that trip when you have the chance—these experiences often don't come around again and can provide a much-needed mental break to recharge. Balancing financial needs with school responsibilities is tough. Saying yes to substitute teaching not only bolsters your wallet but also offers valuable hands-on experience that connects theory to practice. Similarly, petsitting can be a surprisingly effective way to make some income while having a comforting companion around during your long study hours. These small actions can improve both your financial and emotional wellbeing. It's natural to compare your progress or career path to others, but remember that everyone's journey is unique. Focus on your growth rather than measuring yourself against peers. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of social connections—say yes to weddings and social events when you can; these moments build relationships and provide joyful breaks from the rigors of grad school workload. Finally, remind yourself that grad school is only two years. It may feel endless at times, but it will be over before you know it. By staying mindful of this timeline and embracing the whole experience—both challenges and joys—you can create lasting memories and professional readiness. Incorporate flexibility, self-care, and openness to opportunities throughout your grad school journey; these small yet impactful choices empower you to emerge stronger, more skilled, and ready for your career as a dedicated speech pathologist.
