Balancing life in Grad School ✨

Grad school is really hard, but I think finding a good balance is the hardest part. Most of the friends you will have will be on jobs with clearly defined work hours and weekends off, or in med or law school with an entire community living in the same situation. Yes you have a lot of friends in grad school, but I do not think it is the same as law school or med school where everyone is in a similar position.

In grad school, at least for me, we were all in different classes and had different research, so our life’s look extremely different. I think that’s great, but makes it hard to have an idea of what life should look like.

Here are some of my tips for finding a good balance :)

... Read moreBalancing life in grad school can be challenging, especially when academic and personal demands pull you in different directions. Establishing a structured daily routine can significantly enhance your productivity. Aim to work during set hours, ideally from 8 AM to 5 PM, which mimics a traditional job structure. Incorporate regular breaks into your schedule, including a longer lunch break, to recharge and maintain focus throughout the day. Moreover, it’s vital to engage in activities outside of school to cultivate a balanced lifestyle. Make it a point to dedicate time weekly for solo adventures, allowing yourself to explore interests unrelated to your academic life. This can provide a refreshing break from your studies and enhance your overall mental health. Physical health is equally crucial in maintaining a balanced life. Regular workouts and self-care are not just beneficial for your body but are also instrumental in enhancing your academic performance. Remember, just because you are not actively working does not mean you are not being productive. Taking time to unwind and care for your body is a vital part of the grad school experience. Lastly, learning to say no is a fundamental skill in your grad school journey. The temptation to engage in all social invitations can be overwhelming, but it’s essential to prioritize your mental space and workload. Overcommitting can lead to burnout, harming both your studies and personal life. Practice saying no to commitments that don't serve your well-being, maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal enjoyment.
