Vegan Cooking Class in Japan! 🇯🇵

Reminiscing about my experience last year for my birthday! I took a vegan cooking class in Komae, Japan with Kaori-San! It was such an experience of a lifetime — Kaori-San met my husband & I at the train station in Komae and drove us to the grocery store, where we explored the ingredients we would be using. She drove us to her home and we prepared vegan ramen, gyozas and made matcha tiramisu 😍 It was all oh so good! So grateful for her for this experience of a lifetime! Forever grateful for moment like this 🫶🏽♥️🇯🇵

Japan's rich culinary tradition typically centers around seafood and animal products, so discovering vegan interpretations of iconic dishes like ramen and gyozas can be truly enlightening. During such classes, participants often get hands-on experience selecting fresh, local ingredients at grocery stores or markets, which helps deepen understanding of Japanese plant-based staples such as tofu, seaweed, and seasonal vegetables. Learning to prepare vegan ramen allows one to appreciate the careful balance of flavors in the broth, usually achieved with kombu (kelp), shiitake mushrooms, and miso, rather than meat-based stocks. The inclusion of matcha tiramisu in the cooking curriculum beautifully blends traditional Japanese flavors with a western dessert concept, showcasing how vegan cuisine can be both innovative and delicious. This kind of cooking class also fosters a deeper connection with local culture through the guide or instructor’s stories and hospitality, often making the experience memorable for participants. For vegan travelers or those curious about plant-based diets, participating in such cooking classes provides not only practical skills but also authentic insights into how veganism can harmonize with Japanese culinary customs. This experience can inspire attendees to incorporate more plant-based meals into their own cooking back home and encourage sustainable eating practices. If you’re passionate about vegan cooking and Japanese culture, these classes are an excellent way to explore both in a personal and engaging setting.
