Vegan Cooking Class in Japan! 🇯🇵

Reminiscing about my experience last year for my birthday! I took a vegan cooking class in Komae, Japan with Kaori-San! It was such an experience of a lifetime — Kaori-San met my husband & I at the train station in Komae and drove us to the grocery store, where we explored the ingredients we would be using. She drove us to her home and we prepared vegan ramen, gyozas and made matcha tiramisu 😍 It was all oh so good! So grateful for her for this experience of a lifetime! Forever grateful for moment like this 🫶🏽♥️🇯🇵

... Read moreTaking a hands-on cooking class in a foreign country is truly one of the most rewarding ways to dive deep into a culture, and my experience in Japan was no exception. It’s not just about cooking; it’s about sharing stories, learning traditions, and creating memories that last a lifetime. If you're looking for an immersive experience beyond the usual tourist routes, a local cooking class, especially a vegan one, should definitely be on your itinerary. Many travelers, myself included, often seek out unique group tours that offer more than just sightseeing. Hands-on cooking classes fit this perfectly, providing a fantastic opportunity to socialize with fellow enthusiasts while mastering new culinary skills. Imagine whipping up traditional Japanese dishes like vegan ramen or gyozas alongside new friends! These classes are often designed to be interactive and fun, making them ideal for solo travelers wanting to meet people, couples looking for a shared activity, or even small groups of friends or family. You'll not only get to eat what you cook but also leave with recipes and techniques to recreate the magic back home. To find such experiences, I recommend searching platforms specializing in unique local activities or checking with regional tourism boards. Look for classes that emphasize local ingredients and offer a peek into daily life. Exploring charming, less-traveled areas like Komae, a quiet suburb of Tokyo, felt like uncovering a hidden gem. It's places like these where you truly connect with the local rhythm, far from the bustling city centers. When planning your trip, consider staying or visiting areas that offer a more community-focused vibe, similar to what a "social apartment" setting might provide, even if you're just there for a day trip. Engaging with locals, whether through a cooking class or simply by exploring their favorite grocery stores, offers an authentic "POV" into their world. My host even picked me up from the train station and took me to a local market – a small gesture that made a huge difference in feeling truly immersed. These personal touches are what elevate an ordinary trip into an extraordinary adventure. Don't be afraid to venture slightly off the main tourist path to discover these authentic moments. When searching for your own culinary adventure, whether it's a specific spot like 'Coco Gofukumachi' (if that's a known food area you've heard about) or just a general desire to explore Japanese vegan cuisine, research is key. Look for classes led by local residents who are passionate about their food traditions. Online reviews and blogs are excellent resources for finding these hidden culinary treasures. Don't hesitate to communicate any dietary restrictions beforehand; many Japanese hosts are incredibly accommodating, especially with the growing interest in plant-based diets. You might be surprised at the variety of traditional dishes that can be made vegan, from savory ramen broths to delicate matcha tiramisu. Always check what's included – sometimes it's just the class, other times it includes market visits or even a meal with your host's family. Ultimately, taking a vegan cooking class in Japan was more than just learning recipes; it was about the stories, the people, and the sheer joy of creating something delicious with my own hands. It truly was an experience of a lifetime, and I encourage anyone visiting Japan to seek out similar hands-on cultural activities. You'll bring home not just souvenirs, but invaluable memories and skills.
