Lately I’ve been needing a bit of a reset so I wanted to go back to things that have been fulfilling for me. I’ve found that when I treat myself as if I were my own best friend, I feel better emotionally, physically and mentally.
... Read moreYou know that feeling when you just need a total refresh? I've been there so many times lately! It’s like my energy reserves are running on empty, and I just need to pour a little kindness back into myself. That’s what 'filling my cup' truly means to me – it’s about intentionally carving out time and space to nurture my well-being, just like I would for my dearest friend.
When I started thinking of myself as my own best friend, everything shifted. Would I let my best friend burn out? No way! I’d encourage them to rest, to pursue their passions, and to treat themselves with compassion. So, I started doing the same for me, and it has made all the difference in achieving a real emotional, physical, and mental reset.
One of my favorite ways to recharge is by looking at more art. It doesn't mean I'm always at a gallery; sometimes it's just scrolling through inspiring art accounts on Instagram, exploring virtual museum tours, or stopping to appreciate a vibrant mural in my neighborhood. There's something incredibly calming and inspiring about seeing creativity unfold, and it instantly boosts my mood.
Another big one for me has been cooking new recipes. I used to see cooking as a chore, but now I view it as a form of creative expression and self-care. Finding a challenging new dish, gathering fresh ingredients, and then enjoying the delicious result (even if it's not always perfect!) is incredibly rewarding. It’s a mindful activity that truly nourishes my body and soul, transforming meal prep into a joyful experience.
I've also made a conscious effort to start trying new things. This can be anything from taking a short online course in something totally unrelated to my work, to trying a new type of exercise class, or even just exploring a different part of my city on a weekend. Stepping outside my comfort zone, even a little, brings a fresh perspective, sparks curiosity, and gives me a wonderful sense of accomplishment that spills over into other areas of my life.
And of course, classic selfcare practices are non-negotiable. For me, this looks like a luxurious bath with essential oils and a good book, dedicating time to a detailed skincare routine, or simply taking 10 minutes to meditate and practice deep breathing. It's not about being selfish; it's about replenishing my inner reserves so I can show up better for myself and others, feeling refreshed and present.
Lately, I’ve also been really into what I call 'hobby maxxing' – diving deep into my existing interests to maximize the joy they bring. Whether it's spending an entire afternoon on a creative project like painting or writing, getting lost in a challenging puzzle, or dedicating time to learning a new skill related to a passion, it feels incredibly fulfilling. It reminds me of who I am beyond my daily responsibilities and brings a deep sense of personal satisfaction.
These aren’t grand gestures, but small, consistent acts of kindness towards myself. They’ve helped me restore my emotional balance, boost my physical energy, and clear my mental clutter. If you’re feeling depleted, I truly encourage you to think about what 'filling your cup' looks like for *you*. What little things make you feel cherished and replenished? Share your ideas – I'm always looking for new ways to nurture my inner best friend!
