Many people experience shutdown, activation, or emotional flooding without guidance—this can feel disorienting, much like mythic descents into unknown realms. Ancient cultures gave these internal experiences a meaningful narrative through stories about the underworld, such as Hades or Sheol. These stories mapped stages of descent, confrontation with darkness, transformation, and eventual return to the surface, just as our nervous system cycles through trauma imprinting (Duat), limbic system processing (Hades), and dorsal shutdown (Sheol). This perspective has helped me reframe periods of emotional difficulty as vital transformational processes rather than pathologies. Personally, learning about this myth-biological overlap allowed me to better honor my body’s responses during moments of overwhelm and to approach healing as a navigation through these stages internally. I found that practices like somatic therapy, mindfulness, and gentle movement facilitated the 'reassembly' phase—integrating fragmented emotional parts into wholeness. This understanding has empowered me to share with others that feeling lost or ‘wrong’ in trauma recovery is normal because these internal journeys have always been part of human experience. The difference now is that instead of external myths, we have to learn new ways to recognize and map our inner landscapes. Embracing this ancient-modern synthesis provides hope and a path forward through any difficult descent faced within the nervous system.
