TIPS: HOW TO BALANCE ALL THE THINGS IN COLLEGE 🫶

2025/1/24 Edited to

... Read moreBalancing everything in college – from demanding classes to a vibrant social life and personal well-being – can feel like an impossible puzzle. I remember feeling overwhelmed, constantly wondering if I was doing enough for my grades, my friends, or even myself. But over time, I discovered that it’s less about perfection and more about creating a flexible system that works for *you*. Here’s how I learned to navigate it all and how you can too! One of the biggest lessons I learned was the importance of creating blocks of time to connect with friends and family regularly. It's easy to let social connections slide when deadlines loom, but these relationships are your support system and a vital stress reliever. Instead of waiting for free time to magically appear, I started scheduling specific 'friend dates' – even if it was just an hour for coffee or a group study session. For family, a quick weekly video call or a dedicated text check-in went a long way. These scheduled moments became non-negotiable self-care for my emotional health, making me feel supported and preventing isolation, just as the OCR tips suggested! Improving study skills was another game-changer. It wasn't just about spending more hours studying; it was about studying smarter. I found that active learning techniques, like summarizing notes in my own words or trying to teach the material to a friend, made a huge difference. Breaking down big assignments into smaller, more manageable chunks (setting realistic goals, as my planner reminded me!) helped prevent procrastination. I also started utilizing campus resources more – attending professor office hours, joining study groups, and even checking out free tutoring. Staying organized with my digital notes and using apps like Google Keep, as the OCR mentioned, kept my academic life from feeling chaotic. Now, about using social media extensively – this one’s a double-edged sword. While it can connect us, it can also be a huge time sink and distraction. My strategy became mindful usage. I set app limits on my phone and designated specific times to check social media to avoid endless scrolling during study sessions or when I should be sleeping. I also focused on using it for genuine connection – reaching out to friends, sharing positive experiences – rather than passive consumption or comparison, which can honestly drain your energy. It’s all about controlling the tech, not letting it control you. Finally, the foundation of lasting balance is getting enough sleep, eating well, and getting exercise. These are often the first things to go when college life gets hectic, but they are non-negotiable for sustained energy and focus. For sleep, I tried to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends, and created a relaxing wind-down routine before bed. For eating well, I learned to prep simple, healthy snacks like fruit and nuts, and looked for quick, balanced meal options on campus rather than relying on endless takeout. And exercise? Even short bursts helped! Walking to classes, hitting the campus gym for 30 minutes, or joining a recreational sports club gave me that much-needed physical and mental break. As the tips emphasized, making time for self-care isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for both physical and mental health. Remember, balance is about flexibility and adapting as needed – be kind to yourself through the process!
