6 FUN THINGS TO DO YOUR FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE

2025/3/4 Edited to

... Read moreStepping onto campus for the first time as a college freshman is a mix of excitement and a little bit of 'what do I even do now?' Believe me, I've been there! Your first year is all about exploration – not just academically, but also finding your place, making connections, and discovering what your new college town has to offer. Here are some of the absolute best things I found to do, or wish I had done, to make that first year truly unforgettable. 1. Dive into the Spirit: Attend a Sports Game! One of the quickest ways to feel connected to your school is by embracing its traditions, and for many, that means attending a sports game! My first game at the McKale Center, packed with fans, was absolutely electric. The roar of the crowd, the cheerleaders, and the feeling of shared excitement as everyone chanted for 'Arizona' was incredible. It’s not just about understanding the game; it’s about feeling part of something much bigger. Many schools have a rich sports history, perhaps even a Final Four legacy like those from 1988 or 1994 that are proudly displayed. Experiencing that vibrant school spirit firsthand is a memory you won't forget and a fantastic way to bond with new friends. 2. Find Your Study Sanctuary: Discover Local Cafes While dorm rooms are convenient, sometimes you just need a change of scenery to focus. I quickly learned that finding a cute local cafe became my go-to study sanctuary. There’s something about the gentle hum of conversation, the aroma of coffee, and a perfectly crafted iced coffee that helps me concentrate better. Plus, it’s a brilliant way to explore your college town beyond campus borders. Each cafe has its own unique vibe, and you might even stumble upon a new favorite spot for a quick bite or meet fellow students for a study session. It’s about creating a comfortable space that feels like your own away from the usual campus hustle. 3. Gear Up for Gameday: Go Shopping for New Outfits College gameday culture is a phenomenon, and dressing the part is half the fun! I remember feeling a bit lost on what to wear until I went on a shopping spree for some fun gameday clothes. Whether it's rocking your school colors, finding trendy pieces at local boutiques, or even online stores like Princess Polly that offer stylish options, getting your gameday attire sorted is a rite of passage. It's not just about the clothes; it's about the excitement of planning outfits with friends, heading to the stadium, and showing off your school pride. Don't forget to grab some flowers to complete your spirited look! 4. Embrace Adventure: Go Horseback Riding Sometimes, you need to escape the campus bubble and try something completely different. One of the most unique and refreshing activities I tried was going horseback riding. It was a chance to connect with nature and see a different side of the region. Imagine riding through a beautiful desert landscape, with majestic mountains in the distance and towering cacti all around – it felt like a mini-vacation! It’s a wonderful way to de-stress, experience a new skill, and create an unforgettable memory away from textbooks and lectures. Look for local stables that offer guided tours, often suitable for beginners. 5. Hit the Slopes: Try Snowboarding If your college is fortunate enough to be near mountains, then you absolutely have to try snowboarding! Even as a complete beginner, hitting the snowy slopes was an exhilarating experience. The crisp mountain air, the thrill of gliding down surrounded by pine trees, and the convenience of ski lifts making it easy to get back up – it’s an incredible way to embrace the winter season. Whether you take a lesson or just go with friends for a fun day out, it’s a fantastic way to challenge yourself, enjoy breathtaking views, and create some truly epic stories to share. 6. Build Your Tribe: Make New Friends Beyond all the exciting activities and new experiences, making new friends truly defined my first year. It sounds simple, but actively seeking out connections, whether in classes, through clubs, or even just in your dorm, makes all the difference. Sharing moments like watching a spectacular sunset over a mountain view with someone new, or celebrating a win at the McKale Center, creates bonds that will last beyond college. These friendships provide a crucial support system and countless opportunities for new adventures. Remember, everyone is looking for their people, so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!
