When your kids finally share

Being a single mom is hard, and some lessons take time. It took a minute to even get them to start sharing the tablet — and we’re still working on it.

If you have tips on how you encourage your kids to share more easily (especially with screens), I’d really appreciate the advice. Parenting is a constant learning process over here 💛

... Read moreAs a parent, especially as a single mom, teaching kids to share can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. When it comes to screens like tablets, it can be particularly challenging because devices are highly engaging and kids often have strong attachments to their screen time. From my experience, one effective strategy is setting clear and consistent rules around screen use and sharing. We started by establishing a timer system where each child gets a set amount of time before passing the device to the next sibling. This reduces disputes because the turn and duration are predictable and fair. Another tip is to involve the children in creating these sharing rules. When kids help decide the guidelines, they are more likely to respect and follow them. For example, asking for their input on how long turns should be or creating a sharing schedule can give them a sense of ownership. I’ve also found that encouraging cooperative play using the tablet helps. Finding apps or games that allow multiple players or require teamwork encourages kids to engage with the device together rather than competing for it. Patience and positive reinforcement go a long way. When they share voluntarily or wait for their turn without fuss, praising their behavior reinforces the sharing habit. Lastly, balancing screen time with other engaging activities helps reduce the intensity of screen attachment. Outdoor play, reading, and creative projects offer alternative sources of fun that can make kids less possessive of their devices. Overall, the key is consistency and empathy—understanding that learning to share takes time and providing gentle guidance along the way.
