Learning to draw days 1 through 3

It's so easy to get stuck when you're just starting your drawing journey, isn't it? I know I do! Often, the biggest hurdle isn't picking up the pen, but answering that age-old question: 'What to draw?' When I first decided to really commit to drawing, my mind went blank. You saw my 'weird' turkey attempt – that was a perfect example of just trying *something*! For anyone else staring at a blank page, here are a few things I've found helpful, inspired by my own first few days: 1. Start with What's Around You (Even if it gets Weird!): Don't overthink it. Look around your room right now. What's on your desk? A coffee mug? A plant? Your hand? My infamous 'D.A.V.E THE HUMAN HAND' drawing actually started from trying to sketch something simple. It might not turn out exactly as you planned, and that's perfectly fine. Embrace the quirks! Sketching everyday objects helps you practice lines, shapes, and perspective without the pressure of creating a masterpiece. 2. Play with Words & Imagination Prompts: Sometimes, a silly phrase can spark the most interesting ideas. Think about my 'SPINACH SPIDER' or even the concept behind 'Princess Peanut Her Royal Saltiness'. These aren't things you'd find in real life, but they're incredibly fun to bring to life on paper. Try opening a book to a random page and picking out two unrelated words, then try to combine them visually. Or use online drawing prompts – there are tons out there! It's a fantastic way to stretch your creative muscles and come up with unique characters or scenes. 3. Nature & Fantasy: Find Your 'Mother Nature': If you love more detailed or ethereal drawings, look to nature or fantasy for inspiration. My 'MOTHER NATURE' drawing was an attempt to capture something grand and flowing. You don't need to go deep into a forest; even a single leaf, a flower, or a cloud formation can provide endless inspiration. For fantasy, think about myths, fairy tales, or even just daydreaming about magical creatures or hidden realms. Let your imagination run wild! 4. Don't Be Afraid to Get Expressive: Remember that drawing with the screaming face and the 'You Have Stolen THE loyal CROWN!!!' text from my sketchbook? Sometimes, you just need to vent or express a strong emotion through your art. It doesn't have to be pretty or perfect; it just needs to be *yours*. Doodling abstract shapes, angry squiggles, or even drawing a funny caricature of how you feel can be incredibly therapeutic and a great way to fill your pages. The most important thing I've learned in these first few days is to just keep drawing. Don't worry if it looks 'weird' or not like what you imagined. Every line is practice, and every page filled is a step forward. Your sketchbook is your personal playground, so let go of perfection and just enjoy the process of creating!
